                                                                                                                4 children, 5 grandchildren

I compiled, from the efforts of many cousins, about 5000 descendants of Thomas  & Hannah, and still have copies of this at $40.00, postpaid.  I'm aware (and have a copy) of Edward Watts work, but in spite of the wonderful work, I don't yet accept the lineage of Thomas who married Hannah, nor that of Thomas who married Finnety.  Some day I hope to find a record of the 1st wife of Ludwell P. Watts, and better proof of those two Thomas Watts ancestries.

QUERIES

From:     Watts4550@aol.com

Evidence is continuing to grow that the mysterious Elias "Ali" Watts that married an Eleanor "Nelly" _________ was closely related to William Watts or was actually the same person if William's middle name was Elijah (Elias in the New Testament). One source, by tuntiedt@smyth.net, had placed in Ancestry.com that a William Watts married Perlina _________ and his sister, Caroline Elizabeth Watts married Daniel Hale. When asked where he got the information, he didn't remember. Maybe one of your readers could connect all this for me. I can't tell which William Watts to go after because there's not much information available on the net. There are names like Ratcliff and Elkins handed down though the family, but I haven't been able to locate any that rang a bell.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Fred

Still searching for anyone out there who may have info on my Watts family from PA.

I know from what little info I have gathered that they lived in Perry, Juniata and Snyder counties. I am especially searching for dates on Samuel Watts and his wife Tillie Dressler. If anyone on here is searching in Pa I would gladly trade what little info I have with them.

Mary

Searching Watts, Benner, Dressler, info from above mentioned counties.

I am looking for any information on ggggrandfather Allen Watts.  In 1870 he was 13 and a domestic servant for Dr. Charles E. May in Columbian Grove Township in Lundenburg, VA.  Allen was born January 1957 in VA and I cannot locate his parents.  Any information you may have before 1870, regarding

Allen Watts would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tina Watts Jackson

John Watts Former Negro Slave (Henrietta Carlisle Interviewer Edited by J.R. Jones)

State of Georgia

John Watts was born in 1854, the son of Lily Ware and Henry Watts. Mis mother was owned by the George Ware family of Fayette County, and his father belonged to the Watts family of Coweta County.

Among the earliest recollections of John, are the visits of his "pappy" to the Ware plantation. His father would get a pass from his master and come to see his wife and four children several times a month.

John, born in Fayette, has never been out of that county. As a little boy, he was put in the fields to pick cotton. "Course in them days didn't use no fertilizer, we jest planted cotton, corn, wheat'n cats wid out dat."

Christmas was always a happy time with the slaves on the Ware farms. "We wuz give a week holiday and plenty of meat'n bread." Frolics included "dancing, shouting, pattin'n fiddling." The Negroes attended church services in the white church, special pews being allotted them in the rear of the building. John said the first"preachin" he remembers was at a white Baptist church and that Rev. George Davis was the preacher. He was baptized by a white minister following the baptism of white members of the church.

During the War Between the States, John lived at the Fayetteville home of Mr. and Mrs. George Ware, Jr. Mr. Ware was in the Confederate Army, and John stayed at home "to keep care o' little Mistress" while her husband was away. The Yankees once came by the house and "called fer sompin t'eat and also tuk the little mistress fine hoss, but dey didn't burn the house and dey lef us sompin t'eat."

There weren't any battles fought on the Ware plantation, but the residents heard the guns of the battle of Jonesboro. (Fayetteville is eight miles from Jonesboro.)

Confederate soldiers frequently passed through Fayetteville. "After freedom, we jest staid on wid the Ware's. Freedom didn't have so much meanin' fer us."

"A sho sign of cold weather is fer a cat to come in and lay down wid his back to the fire." Another superstition told by John's wife: "Never iron a man's shirt tail, 'cause it's sho to make em mean."
Hoarhound tea and "tep'ntine" are the remedies used by John and his family for "most any ailment."

John Watts; Fayetteville, Georgia November 25, 1936

THE INFLATION CALCULATOR
 http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

If you are ever reading a will of your ancestor and want to know how much the monetary amounts mean in today’s terms, then go to the web site above and find the Inflation Calculator.  This Calculator was posted to the web by Morgan Friedman and covers values from 1800 to 1998.  I found it quite interesting and fun!  You can also put in an amount in today’s terms and figure out what value it would have been in 1820 or any other year.

Example:  If your ancestor left an inheritance of  $500.00 in 1850, that amount would be worth $9569.74 today.

This helpful bit of information was passed on by a subscriber to the Dalton Newsletter who I believe is also a on our list as a Watts descendent.  I really want to thank that person but accidentally deleted their e-mail address.  So whoever you are…..Thanks from all of us.

Finley was already a Baptist minister when he met and married Effie Belvadere Blackburn.  Their post office was Walsh.

Effie Blackburn was born in 1884 and was one of 13 children born of William Adolphus and Lydia Cornelia Green (from Deep Gap).  Two children died at a young age .  Mary Louanna (Lula) died in mid-wife as a result of complications from polio.  Walter lived in Wilkes until his death.  The youngest, Alice B. Anderson, now resides in China Grove.  All of the younger Blackburn members, parents and grandparents are buried in a family plot near the old homesite where the Walter Blackburn home was built.

To the Finley C. Watts family were born five children.  Alice Dare W. Crews of Lake Wales, Florida; Clara Lee W. Huffman of Drexel, N.C.; Dr. Finely Clay Watts (whose untimely death occurred in 1983); Rev. Reuben Watts, now of Lakeland, Florida; and Dr. Lester Earl Watts of Winston Salem.

Children of Alice Dare Watts Crews:  Thelma Lee, William Hilton, James Finley.  Children of Clara Lee Watts Huffman:  Jane, Lydia, Robert.  Children of F. Clay Watts;  Finley, Elizabeth, Richard, Charles.  Children of Victor Watts:  Victor, Debbie, John.  Children of Earl Watts:  Lester, Laura.

Finley died at the age of 49 in 1943.  He had a very active ministry as pastor and evangelist.  He was well known in Wilkes and surrounding counties.

Effie B. Watts died at the age of 80 in 1969.  She and Rev. Watts are buried in the cemetery at New Hope Baptist Church beside his parents.  Their home in Purlear was built in 1925.  It stands now as a reminder of a heritage that is highly treasured by family members who frequent this retreat.
