I have almost no information on my Watts line.  I hope someone can make a connection to it and benefit both of us.

Sarah V. Watts, b Dec 1857, d 1913. BP and DP unknown.

Marr. Alexander Smith Oct 1873, Mecklenberg Co., NC.

            Three more - names unknown.

Alexander died prior to   Sept. 1892.  This is known because Sarah married Lauson C. Carter at that time.  They had at least two children:

            Lassen (Lawson) C., 1894

            Odessa (Dezar) 1897.

There may have been other children but I have found nothing to indicate it.

Sarah's father was Rufus Watts, b c1838 in NC. He married Jane ____ b c 1836. Three child.:

            Sarah. b c 1857

            Mary, b c 1858

            William, b 1860

I have unable to find anything about the death or burial of Alexander Smith or Rufus Watts. Most of the names are too common  to allow any assumptions of kinship and I am, and have been for several years, stuck at this very tall and very thick brick wall.  Hope this helps.

CORRECTION

Subj:       Roda Watts lineage

From:     idrdon@earthlink.net

Lori,

Hi, how are you?  I recently sent you info on my cousin Roda Watts as Roda is getting used to his new computer.  Roda wanted you to know his mother Genevia Annie Polston was in fact Herbert Watts "FIRST" wife (my computer listed her in error as wife 2).  Also, Roda wants his father's middle name listed as Herbert Dorsey Watts (my mother listed him as Herbert Darcey in our family Bible).  Elaine CARR was Uncle Herb's second wife, together they had daughter Lynda Lee Watts.

If you wouldn't mind making these corrections, I would very much appreciate your assistance.

Sincerely,

Judy Spaulding, in California

ADDENDUM TO “THOMAS WATTS OF STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA & HIS DESCENDANTS”

The following is an addendum to the well-written book discussed in November’s issue of Watts’ On-Line.  (issue #68 ).  A more detailed addendum will be sent to those of you who have purchased the book.  As many of you know, genealogy is a subject, which always has more to be discovered.  In this case, the author has decided to share his most recent research because it is significant to the man in which the book is titled.

Copies of this book can still be ordered by sending a personal check or money order of $25.00 to:  Edward C. Watts, 2108 N. Quantico St., Arlington, VA 22205. This amount includes shipping.  Please note that if you send a personal check the book will not be sent out until the check clears.

Lori

I have done further research relevant to information provided in "Thomas Watts of Stafford County, Virginia, and His Descendants" that may be of interest.  A more detailed version of what appears

below, including documentation, will be included with copies of  the book as an addendum.

The book erroneously states that Thomas Watts died circa 1674.  This was based on my misinterpretation of the phrase "Thomas Watts late of this county deced for Sixteene years," which  appears in a Stafford County order book entry dated 7 April 1690.  The "Sixteen years" from the 7 April 1690 record clearly refers to the term of a lease to Symon Stacy rather than to the period during which Thomas Watts had been deceased since (upon closer inspection) the same record later refers to a lease with "Terms under sixteen years."  Other Stafford County records confirm that the elder Thomas Watts signed the lease.  That the April 1687 lease refers to "ye terme of Fifteen yeares" and describes Thomas Watts as a "Wheelwright" rather than a carpenter (as in the will of Edward Maddocks) adds further confusion, but these discrepancies now appear to be inconsequential.

Thus, Thomas Watts (Senior) signed a lease in April 1687 but was deceased by April 1690.  The range of dates for Thomas's death can likely be narrowed somewhat by reference to other records.  It seems likely that Edward Maddocks's 24 March 1688 bill for medical treatment and supplies was for Thomas (Senior) since he died soon thereafter and since the record associated with the bill neither refers to Thomas as "Junior" nor as deceased.  Thomas's widow Mary married John Pimmett, and since John was deceased as of 21 March 1689, Thomas apparently died sometime between 24 March 1688 and 21 March 1689.  A deposition of Thomas Watts, age 34 or thereabouts as of 27 September 1686, which again did not refer to Thomas as "Junior," implies that the elder Thomas was born around 1652.

In addition to the "remedial" research discussed above, I have done further research on Thomas and Mary (Norgrave) Watts and their children.  The most significant finding is that Thomas and Edward Watts are likely to have migrated to Stafford County from Northumberland County, Virginia.  A Thomas Watts is listed in the levies from Northumberland County on the same line as Ambrose Feilding in October 1674, and in April 1676, Thomas was compensated for the corn and clothes due him from Ambrose Feilding.  Apparently, indentured servants received corn and clothes from their masters upon completion of their term of  indenture.

In Februrary 1679, Thomas Matthew had received 3,800 acres in Northumberland County for the importation of 76 persons.  This group included Edward Watts, who was also an indentured servant.

Edward served the customary five years under masters John Harris and Thomas Matthew.  In April 1683, Edward was freed from servitude and Thomas Matthew was ordered by the Court of  Northumberland County to give Edward the corn and clothes due him.  This is the last known record for Edward in Northumberland  County, the timing being consistent with the appearance in October 1687 of the first known record for Edward Watts in Stafford County.

There is further reason to believe that Thomas and Edward of Northumberland County were the same persons who appeared later in the records of Stafford County.  James Austin received a patent in September 1661 for the transportation to Virginia of "William Norgrove."  This is likely to be the William Norgrave who became Thomas Watts's brother-in-law since this is the only known record for a William Norgrove or William Norgrave in any Virginia county other than Stafford.  There is also another connection between Northumberland and Stafford for Edward Watts.  Among the passengers transported with Edward was George Lyle.  This is likely to be the same George Lyle who was mentioned in the will of Jacob Hubbard, the first husband of Edward's wife Anne.  The will asked that George Lyle become the guardian of Jacob's son John if Anne were to die.

Did Thomas and Edward Watts emigrate to Northumberland County  because of connections to a father or another relative already  living there?  There are indications that Henry Watts, who lived  in Northumberland County from 1655 to 1670, had some connection to the Norgrave family.  In March 1657, Henry did an inventory of an estate with James Austin, who transported William Norgrove into Virginia.  William Langford, who made a gift of land in Stafford County to the children of John Norgrave, witnessed a deed for Henry Watts in Northumberland County in December 1665.  Nevertheless, Henry's June 1670 will made no mention of any children he may have had, and records for other Wattses of  Northumberland County also provide no strong indication of a relationship to the Wattses of Stafford County.

The revised and additional information discussed above on Thomas and Edward Watts seems to lessen the likelihood that Thomas was the father of the Edward Watts who died circa 1691.  They may have instead been contemporaries since their periods of indenture were only about seven years apart and since the first known Stafford County records for Thomas and for Edward pertain to county levies for work they performed at the court house and prison on the same date, 16 October 1687.  It still seems likely that Thomas and Edward were closely related -- especially since Edward's wife was assaulted at the house of Symon Stacy and because her son Edward (Junior) bought land from Thomas and Mary Watts's son-in-law Charles Cale -- but that Thomas and Edward were brothers or cousins rather than father and son.

St. Paul's parish, Tivoli, was incorporated in 1817 and has occupied two church buildings on two sites. The first church (1818-1868) stood on the main road east from Tivoli at the intersection with the road to Germantown, on the northwest corner of the intersection. It was known as the ""White Church"" in contra-distinction to the ""Old Red Church"" (Reformed Dutch} a mile to the north. The second church (1868) stands on the river road about a quarter of a mile north from the main road between Tivoli station and Madalin village, the property as a whole being one of exceptional beauty and dignified taste. In the enclosure about the church are the stones from which the following inscriptions were copied. The slope of the ground westward from the chancel afforded a suitable location for a series of family vaults, erected there by the Livingston, Watts and de Peyster families.
