JOSEPH WATTS OF OHIO

I'm a new subscriber and am finally getting my WATTS information in.  We've researched as far back as my great-great-grandfather JOSEPH WATTS.  He was born in New Jersey about 1781.  He married at least twice, once to LYDIA ________ and later to SARAH _________.  There's an earlier record for Butler County, Ohio ( where my GGGF lived for many decades and where he died ) for the marriage of a JOSEPH WATTS to a JEMIMA HARDIN, but we have no proof that this was the correct JOSEPH.  Some of my GGGF's children's names were JOHN, HANNAH, JOSEPH S., ISAAC, ELIJAH, and SAMUEL, my great-grandfather.  JOSEPH owned 150 acres in Morgan Township, where he died in 1869.  He and some of the other family members were buried in a small private cemetery on the land of a neighbor, JOHN ROSS.  We would love to know where that cemetery is located now and be able to get transcriptions from all the stones.

SAMUEL WATTS, who was born in Ohio in 1816, married my great-grandmother CHARLOTTE CAMPBELL in Butler County in 1838.  Some  of their children's names were ELIZABETH, EMILY, and WILLIAM PARKER, my grandfather. They migrated west and ended up living on land that later became part of Jefferson County, Nebraska.  CHARLOTTE died sometime before 1868.  That's the year SAMUEL married MARY ANN CASE SOLLIDAY in Jefferson County.  SAMUEL and MARY ANN had two children together, CARRIE ROSE (or ROSA) and CLARENCE LONDON.  Sometime in the late 1870s the couple separated and MARY ANN took CARRIE and CLARENCE and children from a previous marriage to the Denver, Colorado area to live.  SAMUEL died in 1879 and is buried at the Rose Creek Cemetery in, or near, Jefferson County.

We know that EMILY WATTS married LUMAN LARRABEE of Haddam, Washington County, Kansas.  The name of one of their children was CLINT.  EMILY died in 1939.  She and LUMAN, CLINT, and perhaps other relatives, are buried in Haddam Cemetery.     My grandfather, WILLIAM PARKER WATTS, who was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1841, served on the Union side in the Civil War.  He joined the Ninth Kansas Cavalry at Marysville, Kansas in 1861.  He and my grandmother, MELINDA ELLEN (or PERCY) JOLLY, the daughter of JOHN L. and MATHILDA VANCLEAVE JOLLY of Indiana, were married at Wymore, Nebraska on February 21, 1870.  Their children were CHARLOTTE D., MARTHA C., HESTER MAY, MATILDA ELLEN, WILLIAM L., MARY E., JOHN LARRY, VIOLET ANNA, SAMUEL PARKER, CLARENCE C., and HENRY JOLLY, my father, the baby of the family.  MELINDA died in 1915 and WILLIAM PARKER in 1918.  Both, as well as their children JOHN and SAMUEL, are buried in a private cemetery on the DUTCH WOODARD farm six miles north of Okemah, Oklahoma.  The family had moved to Oklahoma from Nebraska in early 1891.

CHARLOTTE D. ("Lottie") was born in 1870 and died in 1904.  She was married in 1898 to JESS SOLTS ( or SCHULTZ).  LOTTIE is buried at Fraser, Idaho.   MARTHA C. was born in 1872 and died at the age of fourteen.    HESTER MAY was born in 1873 and was married in 1898 to GEORGE BARNUM of McCloud, Oklahoma.  She died in 1900.  MATILDA ELLEN was born in 1874, married in 1892 to JOEL WILSON of Weippe, Idaho, and died in 1941.

WILLIAM L. was eleven months old when he died in 1877.  MARY E. was born in 1877 and died in 1955 in Austin, Texas.  She married PAUL FEUERBACHER of Austin.  They, like her parents, had eleven children.

JOHN LARRY was born in 1879 in Reynolds, Nebraska and died in 1955.  He never married.  VIOLET ANNA was born in 1881, married CHARLES METCALF of McCloud, Oklahoma, and died in 1899.  She's buried at Nemaha, Oklahoma, near McCloud.

SAMUEL PARKER was born in 1883 and died in 1929.  He married MOLLIE JONES.  He and MOLLIE had seven children.

CLARENCE C. died as an infant in 1884.

My father, HENRY JOLLY, was born at Pawnee City, Nebraska in 1890 and died at Sanford, North Carolina, in 1968.  He's buried at Belmont, Gaston County, North Carolina.

JACOB V. WATTS

What ever became of Jacob V. Watts?  Jacob V. Watts is a younger brother to my Great Grandfather Levi Watts (1829 GA). (I believe the middle name may be "Van Buren" as Van Buren Watts, age 15, is found living with brothers of Levi Watts in 1850 Blount County, Alabama Census with Ellis Watts, Survantus Watts (available on-line).)

Recently, I learned  Jacob V. Watts has been erroneously replaced by a fictictious person named "John W. Watts".  John W. Watts is documented as being in Jacob V. Watts's grave at Old Houston Cemetery, Winston County, Alabama!!!  Fictictious "John W. Watts" has also been given Jacob V. Watts' military records in books documenting Civil War Soldiers!

Four years ago, I flew from California and met with distant relatives who drove to an area I'll never find again, hiked up an overgrown logging road to  top of a hill and took a small trail to the Watts Family Graveyard (land once owned by Ellis Watts and his siblings now maintained by the Rangers of this State Forest) ...in the county of Winston, Alabama.  There were about 30 graves marked by field stones.  Only two headstone were readable - J. V. Watts (and it is clearly J. V. Watts!  I do have pictures) & Ira Knighten (son-in-law to Survantus Watts,  who was brother to Jacob V. Watts).  There were no Civil War Markers to designate Jacob V. Watts had served in the Civil War.  (JacobV. Watts    48th Infantry regiment, AL.  Volunteers, Capt. Reuben Ellis CO Muster Roll of May 30, 1862)

Quotes of research by Treva  Watts Hood of actual Civil War and Pension Records stored at Wallace College, Hanceville, Alabama wrote:

I went into the Civil War Records on J.V. Watts  that we found last week.  The only thing of interest was his age at joining, 24, on April 10, 1862.  It also lists him as J.V.  He joined at Blountsville.  He was listed as AWOL on 4 muster rolls, but then another said he appeared on a Register of Medical Director's Office, Richmond, VA Hospital 3 Ala Furloughed Oct 11, 1862.  He was paid $52.00 on Nov 20, 1863 at Selma, AL and it had his mark showing he received it, so he couldn't have been AWOL.  He was probably wounded during this time.  I could not find anything on the Index to Correspondence of Records and Pension Office 1889-1920.

Quotes of research of actual Civil War and Pension Records stored at Wallace College, Hanceville, Alabama by Linda Watts Parrish Sept 22, 1999:

J.V. Watts was either a PVT or Corporal in CO F of 48 Regt of Alabama Infantry.  On 30 Aug, 1862 he was shot in Right knee at Manassus, VA. In 1885 he is living near Cullman, 1889 in Winston CO, Feb 12 1896 he is 59 and in Addison; Age 66 in Addison.  Oct 1913 Z. J. Watts is 77 yr widow-married J. V. about 2 yr after the surrender.  "I was his 2nd wife" - he was a cripple when they married. He died from heart dropsy.  May 10, 1915 - Z. J.'s address is Ashridge, Winston CO., she was born 22 June 1837 in Greenville, SC.  She is 78 yr - "This lady is almost blind, she can bearly see how to get about".

.....the name of John W. Watts, Pvt, 1st Alabama Cavalry; b Nov 10, 1835 died Mar 4, 1904; bur in Old Houston cem, Winston Co AL..... rechecked the appexdix in Dodd & Dodd's Winston, An Antebellum....and see that they have the gravestone inscription to be that of a J.W.Watts, b11/10/1835 d 3/4/1904.

So what will happen in a hundred years when descendants begin looking for Jacob V. Watts?  When the local people no longer remember and the records show a "John W. Watts" instead?  How many other of our relativesnames have been transposed in the records?  Is there any way we can do to get this records corrected?  Thank you for any assistance you may have to offer.
