Again I have had to limit
the number of members lines in the newsletter. If you don’t see your
line it should be in next month’s issue. With over 350 members strong I
should be receiving more research for the newsletter. Lately it has
slacked off. I know the holidays are upon us but let keep the newsletter
going another year and send in any research you think might be of interest
to other. All is appreciated. We have been able to keep this newsletter
going for over three years now thanks to all of you!
Just a reminder…every month I get addresses that
bounce back. I am now deleting them. If you some reason you do not get
the newsletter in the first week of the month don’t hesitate to e-mail me.
I also want to be sure to point out the two new books
now available. The first one I have not seen but the second one is
excellent! If you have Watts in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana,
Alabama, or Georgia you want to read the review below.

ST. GEORGE TEMPLE RECORDS
LDS Film#170,841
These are recorded records from the St. George, Utah
Temple. I am listing all persons and relationships recorded as it shows
their relationship to a Watts. Most all the people they list were from
Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri. The first column is the person’s name
and the second column is the relationship. I have copied the
relationship as it is shown in the record but how it is recorded is not
consistent. For instance: Mildred Watts Dunn was the Aunt of Elizabeth
Watts Fife and she records it, as she is the niece of Mildred Watts Dunn.
Yet if you look farther down she had Elizabeth Durrett as her great
grandmother which is correct. These records were recorded in April 1877
therefore all people they list were dead before this date.

TWO NEW WATTS BOOKS

Watts in 1859

Thomas Watts of Stafford County, Virginia and
his Descendants” by Edward C. Watts
A couple weeks ago I
received a copy of a “Thomas Watts of Stafford County, Virginia and his
Descendants” by Edward C. Watts. Anyone who has any link to Virginia
Watts’s will want a copy of this privately published book. Edward is the
grandson of Rev. Edward Watts who was a contributor to Charles Heineman
with his research. He is a descendant of John Watts and Sarah Barnett and
lives right in Virginia, the main area research. Charles Heineman made a
great contribution to Watts research in Virginia and Kentucky in the
1930’s and in this new book, Edward Watts re-examines his research as well
as going beyond Heineman’s work with new documented evidence, some of
which contradicts Heineman’s theories. Some examples of corrections to
apparent errors by Heinemann:
o Thomas Watts
Distinguishes between records referring to the Thomas
Watts of the title and descendants with the same name. In " The Edward
Watts Family of Virginia and Kentucky" Heinemann says it "would appear
that Edward Watts [of the 1728 land grant] may have descended from THOMAS
WATTS in the following records" and then he lists records of persons named
Thomas Watts’ in various surrounding counties without trying to separate
them.
o Edward Watts (d. c1762)
Distinguishes between records pertaining to this
Edward and to his father Edward (d. 1691). Provides information for the
period after 28 Sep 1728, the date of the last record known to Heinemann.
Heinemann thought this Edward was born c1675, died c1750.
o Edward Watts, Jr. (son of EW died 1762)
Distinguishes between this person, his father, and
Edward, son of Thomas and Esther.
o persons named William Watts
Heinemann wrote: "It seems impossible to segregate
and identify the several WILLIAM WATTS of record in the counties of
Culpeper, Orange, Albemarle, and Madison." The book provides a basis for
separating out these persons named William Watts.
o Edward Watts (m. Elizabeth Downs)
Heinemann didn't know that this was the same Edward
Watts who died in 1795 in Bedford County.
o Benjamin Watts (son of Thomas and Esther)
The book offers evidence against Heinemann's theory
that Benjamin married twice.
o Thomas Watts (son of Thomas and Esther)
Heinemann confuses this person with Thomas, son of
John Watts and Sarah Barnett, and with Thomas who died in 1796.
o Robert Watts (d. 1741)
The book offers evidence against Heinemann's theory
that he was a son of Thomas and Esther.
o Nathan Watts
The book offers evidence against Heinemann's theory
that he was a son of David Watts.
I found this book invaluable
and very well documented. He does an excellent job documenting all his
sources and yet the writing style is that you can read about a family in
almost a story format. He thoroughly covers Census records, military
records and Tax records. An extensive examination of tax records helps
establish the time of a family's migration from one state or county to
another.
I found a highlight of the book is
his documentation of land records. He not only documents the deed but also
provides numerous maps, which show the area of these lands. This helps
make the person's existence more tangible to the reader and would allow
readers to visit the area in which their ancestors owned land. The maps
should also help readers with county boundaries at a particular point in
time, as should an appendix providing information of county formation.
Some examples of additions to existing research:
o The book provides important information on the
family of Thomas Watts of Stafford County derived from the will of Edward
Maddocks. (Note: this will is not listed in the standard reference book on
Virginia wills before 1800).
o Identification of Mary Norgrave as wife of Thomas
Watts
o Identification of probable children of Thomas
Watts, son of Thomas and Mary Norgrave Watts
o Identification of the children of Edward Watts (d.
c1691) and his wife Anne (from will of Anne McPherson)
o Identification of children of Thomas Watts (son of
Thomas and Esther)
o Identification of Charles Cox as husband of Eleanor
Watts and identification of their children and grandchildren.
o Identification of the father, children, and
grandchildren of Richard Watts (m. Sarah)
o Provision of full names for various men who married
Wattses, such as those who married daughters of John and Sarah Barnett
Watts, as well as their children
o information on allied families (for the most part
never compiled before) such as Gregory, Gaines, White, Terry, Watson, and
Hansbrough.
o discussion of wills never before referenced
Unlike C. Heineman, Edward
follows many of the female lines giving us additional information about
our Watts heritage and allied families. Edward also tries to identity the
parents of those marrying Wattses when the information is available. I
believe Edward’s contribution to the Watts research of Virginia and
Kentucky families invaluable to any of you doing research in this area.
He also follows several Watts lines into Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and
Indiana.
The index is one of the best
I have seen in a genealogy book. Where there are several names the same,
such as John Watts, he differentiates between them. A bibliography is
also included.
Copies of this book can be order by
sending a personal check or money order of $25.00 to: Edward C. Watts,
2108 N. Quantico St., Arlington, VA 22205. This amount includes shipping.
Please note that if you send a personal check the book will not be sent
out until the check clears.
If you are unsure whether your Watts
are in the book, just message me (lorlin@aol.com)
and I will be happy to check the index for you.
