Once again there are too many lines for one issue. Isn't it great! If you don't see your submission in this issue, look for it next month. Last month I requested that we try and group our Watts families. If you descend from Chief John Watts's line be sure to contact Paula McGee and get you name on her mailing list. You can e-mail her at pmcgee72@gte.net. If you descend from Edward Watts of Virginia please e-mail me as I am try to form a list of who descend from Edward. The following is an example of an excellent simple line. If you could follow this example it would be ever so helpful. Notice she has no dates and has it in a very simple format so we can see how she descends. Thanks. If you have a Watts line that is not represented and you would like to volunteer to form the list for your line please send me a message. Virginia MEMBERS LINES From: vhhawk@wans.net (vhhawk) As published in "Some Early Tax Digests of Georgia", Ruth Blair, 1926. Capt. Thornton's Dist No.4, Wilkes County, 1793, No.40 Thomas Watts, owning land in Wilkes County, 136 acres of 2nd quality. Ten records down at No.50 and No.51 are my earliest documented Hawk records, Andrew Hawk and Peter Hawk. Seaborn J. Hawk's Jasper County, Ga, plantation diary circa 1856 states that his father was Andrew Hawk and his mother was Ursula Watts, her father was William Watts of England, and his father William [____] church minister. [The ___ may possibly be high__, bright__, or knigh__.] I would like to establish that the Thomas Watts listed so near Andrew Hawk was Ursula's brother; that they are the children of William Watts; and generally learn more on this Watts line, in hopes it will aid me in my Hawk research. 1850 Jasper County, Georgia, Census data reveals that Ursula Watts was born 1782 in Virginia. Thank You, Tommy Markham From: elba12@juno.com (Judith L Baker) Lori, I relative I have yet to meet sent me this newsletter. Please add me to the mailing list! I have been researching my line for over 20 years. My Watts line stems from Lower Little River/Taylorsville/Ufola/Hiddenite, Alexander County in North Carolina. Is there a WEB site. I have a WEB site at MyFamily.com. Anyone wishing to try to make a connection can be sent a 'Guest Pass' to view the files I have thus far. Our quarterly "Watts Up With The Watts" Newsletter is also viewable minus the graphics at the WEB site. Judi - AKA "Little Miss Busybody" From: GMC MO MOM I was just E-mailed from Mickey Watts. U. S. Land Patents were issued about 1835-37 to Josiah WATTS and brother Daniel WATTS. Have not a clue as to what happened to the brother THOMAS WATTS as I find no entries for him. However, in 1850 Conecuh Co., Census we find located there kinsman of these folks; sisters Matilda WATTS and Leodosia WATTS. Believe the Davie (DANIEL) WATTS residing next door is the brother of the aforementioned land grant. Believe that the brother Thomas WATTS may be father of my ancestor, Edward J. "Ned 1" WATTS (have no doubt his father is a Thomas) who is living in 1840 Covington Co., AL near his in-laws, with, it would appear, his mother in residence age 50-60. 1850 Coffee Conty finds this family residing there with a HOLLEY family a few doors away. Also residing in Coffe at this time is one Murdock McLeod family. These folks move to Monroe County by 1860. After making the discovery that the sister of the above mentioned Josiah, Daniel, Matilda, et al, namely Charlotte WATTS married a Hough (these folks lived in Mississippi) and that there was also a HOLLEY connection I began to look further. I found some more Holley folks living in this area (either Monroe or Conecuh county). It seems to me that if we could pool our collective knowledge and clues about these folks we might find some answers to our mysteries of many years. It not too much trouble, could you send this along to the others? Thanks Kaye From: chollp@bellsouth.net (Cynthia H. Porcher) Subj: Re: Thomas WATTS line Lori, Lavinia Huntley w/o my first Thos Watts, had a sister Zilpha who married Joel Gulledge. Joel is the s/o the mystery lady BARSHEBA WATTS from Bedford Co, VA. Thos Watts, Thos Huntley, his wife Zilpha Meador/Meadows, the Gulledges -- all are supposedly from Bedford Co. There's nothing I would like more than to connect some of the Watts lines. Since I don't know the parents or siblings or Thos Watts, there are some possibilities there, too. I love to find the interconnections and intermarriages, so I have spent a great deal of time on that kind of connections among all of my lines. At this point I can't call it a family tree any more, as it is clearly a VINE. chp P.S. I wouldn't doubt your VA line works in with mine somehow...maybe one day some of these lines will connect. LENOIR, N.C. 28645 DEBBIE Contributed by Debbie - From: GMC MO MOM ******************************************** OBITUARY OF BENJAMIN RICHARD MARKAM From Bedford Democrat-April 20, 1914 Death of Benjamin Richard Markham Death claimed an old and highly honored citizen of Lowry and Center Point neighborhoods last Friday, when Mr. B. R. Markham closed his eyes to scenes of this life and crossed down over the great divide. For 78 years, 10 months and 4 days he had journeyed along life's pathway ever following the way the Master trod and sowing seeds of kindness with a loving heart and a kind and ever-ready hand. He was a man by whose life the world was made better and whose loss is irreparable. Mr. Markham was a native of Bedford County, born May 22, 1835. When he was two years old his father Jesse E. Markham with his family moved to Jennings Creek, Botetourt County, where he died after having attained the venerable age of 90 years of age and over. In 1856 Mr. B. R. Markham returned to Bedford County and secured employment with Col. Watts near Bedford City. When Col. Watts had observed the sterling qualities of Mr. Markham he arranged for the young man to go home and take a course of study preparatory to taking charge of a large factory that the Colonel contemplated erecting on his place, but the war broke out and Mr. Markham shouldered his musket and went to the front under Col. Anderson of Buchanan, serving first in the infantry and later in the artillery. He passed through many bloody battles; among them being the siege of Vicksburg, and came out at the end of the war without a scar. At the close of the war he returned to Bedford County and again entered the employ of Col. Watts with whom he remained until 1878, and as a partner having entire charge of the business after Col. Watts moved to Lynchburg along about 1868. Five years prior to leaving Col. Watts, he bought the Smith farm near Lowry where he lived from 1878 to the close of his life, and where he reared a big family, seven of whom still live to do honor to his memory. In 1868 Mr. Markham married Miss Calpurnia Lee a cousin of Col. Watts and daughter of T. N. Lee, who lived near Otterville. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, all of whom survive their father. They are James R. Markham, Walter A. Markham and George J. Markham. The daughters are Mrs. C. W. Leslie of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Ed Theobald, of Roanoke, Mrs. J. J. Johnson, of Penicks, and Mrs. Will Theobald of Sturgis, Michigan. There are eighteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, two brothers and two sisters, all past seventy years of age. They are J. N. D. Markham of Munford, Botetourt County, now past 81 years, and who attended the funeral. The other brother is Solomon Markham of Munford. The sisters are Mrs. Rebecca Obenshain, of Nace, and Mrs. Sallie Arrington of Munford. The funeral services were held at Timber Ridge Church last Sunday and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather and bad roads, the attendance was very large. The services were conducted by the pastor who was preceded by a few remarks by Rev. Kincanon who was several times pastor of Timber Ridge Church and had a long and intimate acquaintance with the deceased. Dr. Kincanon paid the departed the highest compliment "He was a good man". He was a man of few pretensions, but of many good deeds. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father and a neighbor and friend whose loss will be sadly felt as long as life lasts with those who knew him. Pall bearers--H. R. and C. W. Gills, R. C.
