Dramatic Death at a Funeral (Elizabeth Heath Watts) From: jmerk@gte.net (Jim and Judy Mierkey) My name is Judith Lynn Mierkey (Sharkey). My father was Audie Moon Sharkey (Watts) only son James Harry Sharkey. My daught has been forwarding your Watts news letters on to me. I have been going over these letters and have found that they fallow my father's notes. I wrote notes from my father right before he passed away Jan. 1987. Here are a few things that might help others in there research. Rufus Pickney was in the Civil War as a Confederate, Texas Ranger Terrees. My father said that he was a preacher and that he died in a gun fight in Hico Texas. Rufus's wife, Audlea Moon Cantley's father was a Cantley and mother was Duvall. Here is where things go a little strange but might help someone find information. My father talked about Will and John. John died young in a gunfight in Silver City, New Mexico and brother Will died young of a bee sting I believe in Silver City New Mexico too. My father's notes show that these boys where his Grandmother Audlea's brother's which would make them a Cantley. After reading some of the Watts line I can't help but wonder if these boys could of been Watts. My father was not well at the time and had a hard time with last names. The only brothers I could find was John W. Watts born 1843 and William H. Watts born 1846 to Rufus M. Watts and Rhoda J. Watts. This may be of some help to someone else. Please add my e-mail address to your News Letters. I have enjoyed pouring over all of these facts that you and the rest of the Watts line have been able to come up with. My father always said that the Watts family was a very large and close family. Judy Mierkey , jmierk@gte.net From: rakoczy@lcc.net (Cathy Rakoczy) Hopefully the Watts newletter will be able to help me with my Watts line. VA“Redlands”, home today of S.H. Saunders, chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the past twenty years, was built by James Watts, who came from Madison Co., Va., about 1801, and acquired a large tract of land on the north side of the county near Liberty (now Bedford). “Redlands” is situated about one and a half miles from the town and about three hundred yards east of the road to the Peaks of Otter. It is a brick colonial building, but Mr. Saunders has made some additions to the house which have somewhat changed its original appearance. The view from the front, looking south, commands a magnificent stretch of open country, the beautiful, rolling fields in the immediate foreground being a part of the estate. James Watts married Elizabeth Durrett of Albemarle County, and they had a number of children, among whom were James, Jr., who inherited that part of the land on which the manor house stood, and Richard D., who built “Montpelier”, later the home of John H. Watts, and now owned by Harry H. White. After the death of James Watts, Jr., “Redlands” became the property of his nephew, Col. James Watts, an officer in the Confederate Army and a wealthy and influential citizen of Lynchburg. Col. Watts sold the place to Mr. Saunders, who is one of the most progressive farmers of the county. The early members of the Watts family are buried in the family graveyard near the house. Co. of the 2nd Va. Cac., C.S.A. Colonial Families of the Southern States of America, by Tella Pickett Hardy, Published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD. 1965., pa. 531. He entered the Confederate army in April, 1861, s first lieutenant of Company A. Second Regiment Virginia Cavalry, and at once went to the front. upon the reorganization of the Army of Northern Virginia he was commissioned lieutenant-colonel, on May 1862, and attached to General Turner Ashby's brigade, "Stonewall" Jackson's division. He was slightly wounded in an affair at Little Washington, in the Valley campaign; and at both Occoquan and Aldie was severely wounded. During the second battle of Manases, Colonel Watts let the advance of his regiment in the charge at the Lewis House. In this fight Colonel Watts received eight saber wounds. Disabled by wounds in the action at Aldie in July 1863, he was forced to retire for a season, one month later he returned to duty being assigned to the command of the military post at Bedford City (then known as Liberty), where he continued in command until the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appoxmattox Court House. The war over, his spirit nothing daunted, he at once set about repairing his financial losses. His lands devastated, his labor freed, he decided to enter commercial life, and in 1865 made his home in Lynchburg, uniting with his brother Richard T. Watts , and his brother-in-law, George M. Jones, in forming the copartnership Jones, Watts & Company, with three stores in Lynchburg and branches in Danville, Bedford City, Salem and Roanoke, and for nearly a quarter of a century theirs was the leading hardware house in the western half of the state. It deals a lot with the descendants of Garrett and Malachi Watts. It is about the Watts family, claiming to be Cherokees by blood, becoming citizans of the Cherokee Nation. I'll be happy to send copies to anyone that cannot find the book. Cathy Rakoczy - rakoczy@lcc.net ******************************************** I found the following this past week and found it quite interesting. Elizabeth (Heath) Watts is the wife of Robert Harrison Watts. They moved to Utah in 1850. Robert Watts was the son of John Watts and Lucy Dalton of Albemarle County, VA. LoriDRAMATIC DEATH AT A FUNERALParley P. P. Prophet Suddenly Expires After Eloquent Peroration. Deseret Evening News, December 29, 1903 One of the most unexpected deaths that has occurred in Weber County took place yesterday afternoon when Parley Parker Pratt Prophet, one of the most highly respected citizens of Blaine, Davis County, dropped dead in his seat on the stand of the South Weber meetinghouse immediately after preaching a forcible funeral sermon over the remains of Mrs. Watts, who died Friday in her eight-eighth year. The sudden demise of Mr. Prophet was shocking to the large attendance of friends who had gathered to pay a tribute to the dead. Mr. Prophet left his home, which is only a short distance from the meetinghouse, apparently in good health and when called upon to speak was feeling well. He delivered a very excellent sermon, eulogizing the useful life of the deceased. He was intensely interested in his subject, but spoke with remarkable eloquence, his words rushing forth with all the force and vigor of a trained orator, instead of the rough farmer that he was. Several times in his discourse he referred to the beauty of the character of “Grandma Watts,” and how she had been permitted to live, until near the four-score-and-ten year mark, and until she had completed all the work of this life that she had set out to accomplish, and had then passed peacefully to sleep. He warned his hearers, however, that they be ready to meet their Maker at any moment, as none could tell at what hour and what moment they might be called to cross to the other shore. It was given to but few, he said, to live to such a remarkable age as had the noble woman lying before him, and he urged all within the sound of his voice to be prepared for death, and ready to render an account as all must do on the morning of the resurrection. Time and again he expressed his entire confidence in the realities of the future life, when men should be judged for the deeds done in this world. His closing worlds were an eloquent exposition of this thought, and then came the final sentence, “Surely the dead shall rise again. Amen.” He sat in his chair naturally, and a moment later his life went out as suddenly as the flame of a candle. those who sat near could not realize for a few moments that the end had come. The immediate cause of death was the breaking of a blood vessel on the brain. When the congregation realized what had happened, they were overcome with grief. The body of Mr. Prophet was carried from the meetinghouse to this home a short distance away and laid out ready for burial. Parley P. P. Prophet was about 60 years of age. He leaves a wife, three daughters and a hose of friends to mourn his sudden death. The time of the funeral will be announced later. ********************************************
