The Watts On-line
Issue No. 62
May 5, 1999

Because the list is getting so large, I have decided not to keep track of everyone but to only add e-mail address to the list.  Therefore if you change your e-mail address I would suggest you resubmit you line with the new address.  That way people looking in past newsletters can contact you.  I get e-mail asking for updated addresses and I will no longer be able to provide that information.  You will now be responsible in keeping others updated on your new address by submitting all or part of your line.

I also will be deleting addresses that come back to me for some reason to keep the list current.  If you don't get a newsletter in the first week of each month you might want to e-mail me with a request as there may have been a problem with your address.

 ETHELBERT WATTS OF PENNSYLVANIA

 Birth date unknown

Died 13 Jul 1919

Ethelbert Watts was a diplomat.  Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ethelbert was the son of henry Miller and  Anna Maria (Shoenberger) Watts.  He was a descendant of Frederick, a native of Wales, who settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1760.  Ethelbert received his education in Paris the University of Pennsylvania, and at the Royal Saxon School of mines in Freiburg, Germany.   During the final part of the Civil War, he served in the 32nd Pennsylvania volunteers.  Watts completed his education in Germany after the Civil War.  After completing his education in Germany, Watts took charge of the old Marietta Iron Works in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  He later opened his own office as the iron commission merchant and became secretary and treasurer of  an investment company in Philadelphia.  In 1896 Watts was appointed U.S. consul at Horgen, Switzerland.  A year later he became vice and deputy consul-general at Cairo, Egypt.  In this capacity Watts helped prevent Egyptians from furnishing coal and other supplies to the Spanish fleet during the Spanish-American War.  Watts continued his diplomatic career after the war first as U.S. consul at Kingston, Jamaica, then at Prague, Austria, St. Petersburg, Russia, and at Brussels, Belgium.  During his stay in Russia, Watts attempted to protect Japanese interests when the Russo-Japanese war broke out.  Watts was married twice:  in 1871 to Emily Pepper, who born him four children:  Ethel Constance, Marian, Henry Miller, and William Carleton; and in 1894 to Katherine Lorenz Gregg, who bore him two children;  Frances and Ethelbert.
