This is my WATTS connection. Margaret WATTS was my gggrandmother, married to George HARLAND. Margaret's father was Henry WATTS and I don't any information on any of them except that Henry came from a long line of preachers and musicians. I naturally thought immediately of Isaac WATTS, the famous church composer but have been informed that he never married and had no children.

Margaret WATTS and George HARLAND had a daughter Mary Isobel HARLAND b, 1845 d. Apr. 13, 1919 Wichita, KS, IL, m. Edwin Brooks RALL Mar. 30, 1865Table Grove, IL. He was born May 2, 1838 Macomb IL and died Oct. 27, 1929 Wichita, KS. One of E.B. RALL and Mary Isabel HARLAND's children was my grandmother Miram Anna RALL, b. Mar. 21, 1874 in Hiattville, KS, d. Mar. 20, 1966 in La Mirada, CA. She married William Edgar SNYDER, b. 1869 in Bement, IL, died 1936 in Wichita, KS. My Mother, June, is the youngest child of this union.

I hope someone there recognizes these names and can help me get more information on Margaret WATTS and George HARLAND.

Thanks so much,
Sherrel2

I'm looking for a Henery (Henry) Watts who was in JACKSON COUNTY,GA census 1820. I know they were in SC in 1797 because a daughter Jane Watts Landrum showed listed that date on the 1850 census.I've established the line from Henry to now, but I've had a hard time going back mainly because of record access. My line is Henry>>>Sugar Johnson Henry Johnson>>>Henry Lee>>>Richard Lee>>>Ricky Lee. They moved from Jackson county to Fayette Co. when he drew 202 acres. He died in Fayette Co 1827.  Sugar Johnson was the youngest son and he moved to Texas (Vanzandt co) in 1854 and buried in New Harmony cem. BenWheeler, Tx. Henry Johnson made the run in Oklahoma 1889 but didn't get any and he settled in Indian Territory and he died in 1925. My dad was born
at Benwheeler 1878 and moved with the family to Stratford, OK I was born 1934 and I  now live in Guthrie, Ok. Sugar had two brothers, Alfred Mills Watts, his mother was a Annis (Mills) Watts, Robert B. and several daughters.  If you have any information or need more please contact me, richard.watts3@gte.net

Thanks Richard Watts

Subj: Re: Watts' On-Line Issue #59 (Query 2)
From: devodave@jps.net (Dave Eaton)

Hi Marilyn and WATTS On-Line,

In reply to WATTS' ON-LINE Issue #59 February 6, 1999...

I have this information about your part of the GreenbrierCo,VA ->
GalliaCo,OH WATTS family line:

1 WATTS David, born ABT 1725 in Scotland.
+ /???/.
2 WATTS James, born 1753 in MD, died 30 Nov 1810 in
3 GreenbrierCo,VA. 4 Apr 1795: James Watts exempt from taxes
because of old age and infirmities. A Mary Watt of
St.Mary'sCo,MD died 11/3/1764 had daugter Rebecca. This Rebecca
has 4 children: Thomas Dillon, Daniel Watts, Elis. Watts,
James. Could this Rebecca have married our David Watts?.
Family history says James Watt (1736-1819) is a relative. (This
James Watt relative invented the steam engine.). Will witnessed
by Aaron Burr, Andrew Ludington, and William Renick. Buried at
Frankford Meth. Church, GreenbrierCo,VA.
+ PERKINS Mary, born ABT 1753 in MD. There was a neighbor Andrew
Perkins--her father?. 1835: Perkins in RacoonTwp,GalliaCo,OH
tax list: Andrew, Henry, Jeremiah M., John. Married ABT 1775.
She was the daughter of James Perkins [so says Jim Herriman aka
SOBEAR2@aol.com].
3 WATTS Salathiel Weeks, born 5 Jan 1793 in GreenbrierCo,VA.
Minister.
+ BURR Mary (Polly), born 1799. Married 1818 in
GreenbrierCo,VA.
4 WATTS Wesley Clark, born 27 Aug 1837 in GreenbrierCo,VA.
1870: GreenbrierCo,VA census.
+ BELL Emaline, born 1840. Married 29 Aug 1862 in Greenbrier,
WV [IGI].
5 WATTS Eliza V., born ABT 1863 in GreenbrierCo,VA.
5 WATTS Ellen M., born ABT 1871 in Greenbrier, WV.
5 WATTS Oliver A., born 14 May 1874 in Greenbrier, WV.
5 WATTS Julia Ann, born ABT 1867 in Greenbrier, WV.

We who are researching this family have not found any connections to the WATTS families in the southern states or in KY and TN. This family probably followed the Appalatians from MD to Greenbrier County and probably are not connected with other Virginia WATTS families, but let me know if you see any connection. We are most stumped about this family in Maryland around the mid 1700s. Any ideas?

See many other descendents of this James Watts 1753 on my WATTS page at http://www.jps.net/devodave/

DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WATTS AND ELIZABETH DAVIS
This is Patricia Harnden's line (Pharnden@sprynet.com) which she sent in to me via snail-mail. Because I already had much of this line in my notes I just added where certain items were missing. There is a discrepency in the children of Frances Watts and Isreal Jenkins. I had two extra children. They are Elijah and Columbus. I'm not sure where these children came from. If anyone else has these children and can document them please let us know. Patricia has more on the descendants of Varvil family. I would also like information on the father of John Watts, who's name was John also. I do not have a wife for him. Does anyone have this family documented? Lori

Notes for ABEL ABRAM WATTS:
Abel Watts, frequently referred to as Abram and Abraham Watts, was born some time in 1790 according to Census figures used in computing his age.
When he married Sarah, she was a minor as her father gave his consent to the marriage. Able Watts died intestate in Clark Co. KY in 1840. The census shows him living in Montgomery Co. KY in 1820, next to his father-in-law Beverly Daniel. At that time he only had two children, boys under ten years of age. There he is named as Abraham. In 1830 he is back in Clark Co. an named Abel. This accounts for the reason of his name commonly being called "Abe" by his relatives.
Heineman #1600 pa. 166

Notes for SARAH DANIEL:
After the death of Able, Sarah married Robert A. Campbell and they signed a prenupital agreement to the effect that the property owned by each should be retained by each. He died six months after the marriage. She later moved in with her daughter, Sarah (Watts) Snowden. She died there on 28 Jan 1883 and is buried in Clark Co. KY

With his bride he moved from Kentucky in 1825, going horseback over land and following Augustus Cave Davis to the Boone Lick settlement in Howard Co. Missouri. This probably was this man. In the 1850 Census as Augustine Watts, 48, born in Kentucky, was in Putnam, Ind., with his wife Barbara Watts, 48, also born in Kentucky. WATTS/KEY CONNECTION
From: bvc0621@futureone.com (Barbara Van Camp)

Hi Lori -
I have noticed there are some WATTS' that have been inquiring about the WATTS that married into the John Key,
Sr. family of Virginia. When I was in VA a few years back, doing research, I obtained a lot of information, thinking it as my WATTS line. Even though it is not my line, I thought I should start sending you some for the Newsletter. It may be of help to some WATTS researcher, hopefully. I will send more next month.
I just want to say a "BIG THANK YOU" to you for your time and interest in your WATTS on-Line. I have obtained
Several Items of information from those who have contributed. I really appreciate everyone's help.

(more on this family coming in issue #61)

Thomas WATTS - John Hook and Robert Cowan

Tories and Patriots (from "The Virginia Genealogist" page 218 - Vol. 18)

John Hook, Robert Cowan and Thomas WATTS had been Tories during the Revolution and were three of the leaders of the Tory Conspiracy in Bedford County in 1780. The leaders were apprehended, but instead of being jailed and tried in New London (the old county seat of Bedford, now called Bedford Springs), where many of the Tories lived. They were taken to Col. Charles Lynch's home near the junction of the
Staunton and Otter rivers, twenty miles from New London. The summary punishments, principally floggings, dispensed by Col. Lynch gave rise to the expression "Lynch law." It is strange that all three of these Tories had connections with the Keys, who were patriots. Robert Cowan was surety for George Key in his marriage to Sucky Craighead. Thomas WATTS lived in Bedford County, south of the Staunton River, as early as 1779; co-witnessed (with Joseph Key and John Waller Key) a 1783 deed whereby John Key bought 440 acres in Bedford County; and sold 230 acres in Bedford County to John Hook in 1784. John Hook originally operated a mercantile establishment at New London with a partner named Ross, but upon the creation of Franklin County in 1786, he took up residence in the new county, operating a store at Hale's Ford, about a mile from the Staunton River. His name frequently appears as a litigant in Bedford and Franklin County records. In Hook vs. Venable, known as the "Beef Case," Patrick Henry, counsel for the defendant, castigated Hook unmercifully for his profiteering during the Revolution, much to the amusement of the court.
