From: sanibeler@worldnet.att.net (Rich Conser) Hi there. After reading through the Watts GenForum site, I came across an email address for receiving your newsletter. My grandmother is Ida Mae Watts from Acworth, GA. She has always told me that her family was decsendents from the Cherokee tribe. I am hoping that maybe someone can help. However, I have only been able to go as far back back as her Grandmother Ida Mae Watts b.26 Apr 1916 (8th of 10 children) Her parents:Joseph Brite Watts b.24 Nov 1877 Fannin Co,GA d.1 Nov 1951 Atlanta,GA Lucy Mae Kemp b.15 May 1881 Acworth, Cobb Co, GA d.9 Oct 1973 Decatur, GA They married 29 Nov 1900 in Acworth, Cobb Co,GA Joseph Brite was 2nd of 10 children His parents were William Lewis Watts b.9 Sep 1851 Acworth, Cobb Co,GA d.20 May 1923 Acworth Catherine E.Carson b.22 Jun 1852 GA d.15 Feb 1932 Acworth They married in 1873 in Acworth William Lewis Watts' father was born in NC and his mother's maiden name was Huggins. I belive a brother of William Lewis was John S.Watts,b.18 Nov 1863 My grandmother(Ida) has said her gg-grandfather was a Cherokee chief. Could that possibly be John Watts(Young Tassel)? Please let me know if you find any information on this line. I'd be happy to share any additional info that I have. I'd also be interested in receiving your newsletter. Let me know what I need to do. Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays, Rich Conser sanibeler@worldnet.att.net From: Spot12749@aol.com Thanks for sending my first copy of the Watts newsletter. It looks GREAT! You asked that I send the following information. I think this is everything you asked for My Watts line is: My great grandmother was Nancy Watts b. May 16, 1867 at Duff in Searcy County, Arkansas, d. June 1, 1940. Buried Silver Hill Cemetary in Searcy County. M. George Grinder on August 18, 1886. Both lived in Tomahawk Township in Searcy Cty. at the time of their marriage. Her father was William Wythe Watts. He married Eunice Jane "Nicey" Haddock McKinney on April 24, 1865. William and Eunice are both buried in Silver Hill Cemetary, Searcy Cty., AR. Siblings of Nancy were: Safronia b. March 29, 1870 at Duff, d. June 9, 1936, bur. Osborne Cem. St. Joe in Searcy Cty, AR m. JIm Delk on Jan. 18, 1888 at Duff Willie G. Watts, b. 1873 at Duff m. Lucretia Grinder on May 26, 1894. Nancy's Half brothers/sisters (children of Eunice and her first husband Hardin McKinney) were: Malrey Ann Caswell Andrew James Hardin McKinney I have a lead that William Wythe Watts' parents may have been Jacob and Emily Ross Watts. They are reported to have been Cherokee Indians from TN, coming through Arkansas on the Trail of Tears. They stopped in Arkansas because Emily was having a baby. This would fit into family legend. We know there were Cherokees in the family line, but are not quite sure just where. My mother, as a little girl, remembers seeing a tin-type of a Native American woman who was in the family. The tin-type was in her aunt's cedar chest. The house burned and the tin-type was destroyed. It would make sense that this was her aunt's great grandmother, but I don't want to jump to conclusions on that one. I have been told to check the 1850 Census from Washington County, Arkansas, that the name of William appears there as a child of Jacob and Emily. Washington Cty. is not far from Searcy Cty. I haven't checked the Census yet, but will ASAP. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! ******************************************** QUERIES Hi Lori, There seemes to be some confusion as to who is the father of Jacob Watts that married Elizabeth Durrett. Has anyone submitted or stated that they have found proof as to which person was his father? Was it Thomas Watts & wife Esther or Andrew "Forked Tail" Watts and wife Margaret? Andrew was definately Cherokee or part Cherokee. But I have never seen anything that stated that Thomas or his wife Esther were of Cherokee blood. Jacob Watts that married Elizabeth was supposed to have Cherokee blood. Do you know of any way to check this out? Ginny (Note: I have sent her the line of Jacob Watts and Elizabeth Durrett. Maybe someone else can help with the other Jacob Watts.) ******************************************** J. C. If you have, I would be interested in any information you have. I really don't have to much information on this person though. I believe his name was Thomas Hill Watts. He served as Attorney General for Alabama and later I think was Govenor, but this may not be because of the source of my information. The reason I am interested in him is because I have a 96 year old cousin that was married to Flourney Watts (he was the grandson of this Thomas Hill Watts). She (Laura Watts of Montgomery Alabama) told me he was govenor, but, because of her age, it is possible she may be somewhat confused. I do have information though, as to a Jefferson Davis Memorial Plaque that is in the St. Johns Episcopal Church in Montgomery Alabama. Mr. Davis attended that church and gave a "Thousand Dollar" Prayer book to Thomas Watts while Thomas was in Mr. Davis's cabinet. That Prayer book is still on display at St. Johns and is only one of four that was published It received it's name because the order to the Publisher for that amount was confiscated during the war and of only four samples sent previously, the one to President Davis and one to General Lee, got through the lines. Jack Sossoman I was able to find a little more information on Thomas Hill Watts. It is as follows: THOMAS HILL WATTS, son of JOHN WATTS and PRUDENCE (HILL) b. 3 January 1819 in Butler County, Ala., was a lawyer, soldier, Attorney General and Governor of Alabama 1863-1865. This information came from a search to one of my subscription list in FTM. They listed the reference as "The Georgia Bealls and their Kinfolk". Would anyone on the Watts list have the genealogy of this family?
