| Season's Greetings! This is the last newsletter of 1998.
Over the past couple years WE have put out fifty-seven issues full of Watts
Genealogy. I have two thick binders full! Starting in 1999, the newsletter
will be cut back to a monthy newsletter coming in your e-mail sometime
during the first week of each month. January's newsletter, however, will not
be sent out until the second week of the month due to the Holidays. Beginning in January I will be glad to send out back issues as follows: Issues #1-#35 (1996-1997) for $5.00. Issues #36-#57 (1998) for $5.00. I will send all back issues #1-#57 for $10.00. When you order the disks please specify if you want the newsletters in Microsoft Word or Text format. Please don't ask for specific issues to be sent out e-mail. This is very time consuming for me to honor all request. Send orders to: Lori Watts Linnell, 808 E. Thank you, Jean ******************************************** QUERIES Subj: WATTS IN NORTH CAROLINA (This is a copy of a message exchange concerning information in the Watts families in North Caroline printed in a previous newsletter. I am printing it here as it has valuable information someone else might be interested in. Thank you Charles, for sharing it will all of us.) From: CWatts5042 To: doggett@dnet.net Ann: Saw your note in Lorlin page. You may already have this information but I will give it to you again. The ship "Earl of Hillsborough" passenger list had Thomas Watts and wife Sarah on it with 3 children, Andrew age 6, Thomas age 4, and James age 14, all from Ireland in 1767. I do believe you are right about Agnes Norwood and Thomas. Further, I think James had one son named James Jr. who married a Mary Norwood. Another son named Samuel (my line) had one son named Norwood Watts, which ties in with the above. This whole bunch packed up and left Abbeville and went to Highand Co. Ohio after 1801. They are all buried there. I have seen the cemetery listings. They came with the Strain family from S.C. You are also right about a James Watts near Laurens. He was another line and no relation and my research says he died in S.C. somewhere. This is also not all cut in stone, but I am close to being correct. Charles Watts. CWatts5042@aol.com FROM: ewright@phonl.com (ewright) I enjoy your newsletter information so much. I have been trying to find some connection to the Watts that are buried in Glenwood Cem, Chipley, Washington, Fl. I know that we are connected, but I have not got to the right John Watts, or Thomas Watts. I am a decendant of John Watts, who daughter Jane married William Gainer. Through this line is Jane's sister Tabitha who married John Brett Sr., and sister Elizabeth who married a William Daniels. I thought last week-end I had it together but after a look back when I had it on paper, I was not sure because of birth dates. Thanks so much for the information. ******************************************** JOHN WATTS OF NEW YORK http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=W000211 WATTS, John, a Representative from New York; born in New York City, August 27, 1749; completed preparatory studies; studied law; last recorder of New York under the Crown; member of the State assembly 1791-1793, serving as speaker of that body in 1792 and 1793; member of the commission to build Newgate Prison, New York City, 1796-1799; elected to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795); judge of Westchester County from 1802 to 1807; founded and endowed the Leake and Watts Orphan House; died in New York City September 3, 1836; interment in a vault in Trinity Churchyard Contributed by From: Barbara Bose barbwire@midusa.net ******************************************** JOHN SEBRIE WATTS OF KENTUCKY, INDIANA & NEW MEXICO http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=W000213 WATTS, John Sebrie, a Delegate from the Territory of New Mexico; born in Boone County, Ky., January 19, 1816; moved to Indiana, where he completed preparatory studies; was graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced; member of the State house of representatives in 1846 and 1847; associate justice of the United States court in the Territory of New Mexico from 1851 to 1854, when he resigned; resumed the practice of law; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863); delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864; took an active part in equipping troops for the Union Army during the Civil War; appointed chief justice of the supreme court of New Mexico July 11, 1868, by President Johnson, and served in that capacity one year; resumed the practice of law in Santa Fe; returned to Bloomington, Monroe County, Ind., where he died June 11, 1876; interment in Rose Hill Cemetery Contributed by From: Barbara Bose barbwire@midusa.net ******************************************** WATTS IN MISSISSIPPI Jean Stogner Jastogner@aol.com sent me the following data which should be useful to Watts researchers in MS. She is trying to find a Watts family connection to John Watts Stogner in SC. Maybe someone reading the Watts Newsletter has run across his name on some descendant tree and can help her find him. Neal nwatts@swbell.net Hi Neal: I will try to give you a brief run-down on the S.C. Stogners I have. My ex-husband is from Hartsville (Darlington Co.) His grandfather was Lawrence Benjamin Stogner, Sr. Lawrence's father was John Watts Stogner, born 9-25-1839. John married Louisa A. Hemby. They are both in Chesterfield Co. in 1850 and 1860. John's father is William Stogner, born 1810-1820. If William is the son of Sparks Stogner, he was probably born in Richmond Co., N.C. Sparks was the son of either John Stogner or Benjamin Stogner. There seem to be connections with this family in Lancaster and Marlboro Counties. It appears looking at the census that William Stogner's wife was Martha_________. I would be grateful for anything else you can come up with. I was at the Harrison County, MS library today and tried to look up some information for you. MARION CO. MS.
