Virgina marriage bonds MEMBERS LINES From: Larry Watts, Sr. watt6270_ou@sooners.net My ggggrandfather Joseph Watts lived in the Northeast corner of Morgan township in Butler County between 1824 and Jan. 19, 1869 when he died. His neighbor was "John Ross"! John Ross had a small cemetery in the SW corner of his property where it bordered my ggggrandfather's farm and that is where my ggggrandfather and several members of his family are buried. The following is a list of family members who may be buried there: Joseph Watts, born ? died Jan.19, 1869 1st wife-Lydia Parker Watts, born ? died <?1855? 2nd wife-Sarah S. Watts, born ? died ? Children: John Watts, Joseph S. Watts, Elijah Watts, Mauriah Watts, Isaac Watts, In 1854,Samuel Watts, my gggrandfather, moved wife and kids from Butler County, Ohio to a 160 acre farm near Fairbury, Nebraska that the government would give to any settler who would build a house and homestead. My gggrandfather had came to Fairbury in the summer of 1853 with my twelve year old ggrandfather William Parker Watts. Together they built a sod house, as the government required, to validate their land claim. My ggrandfather was left there alone on the praire to spend the winter and hold on to the families farm. My ggrandfather married Malinda Percy Jolly from Indianapolis, Indiana. My grandfather, Henry Jolly Watts, was the youngest of eleven children. William Parker Watts moved the family to Oklahoma, first Edmond, then McCloud, and finally a farm seven miles north of Okemah, Ok. Henry Jolly Watts married Verlie Louise Stone and had three children. My father, William Alfred Watts, was the oldest child born July 16, 1916. Dad married my mother, Ina May Phillips, 19 February 1944 and I am the second of three sons. My older brother is William Henry Watts, my younger brother was James Earl Watts, now deceased. I am married (27years) to Alma Venita Watts, we have a son, Larry Alfred Watts Jr.and a grandson, Iain Thomas Watts, 6 1/2 months old. Yours Truly, Larry A. Watts Sr. From: A-Car@webtv.net (Annette Carter) My gg-grandmothers sister, Josephine Bean, married Philip Watts. They were both slaves in Nazareth, KY. -- had several children born into slavery. Some of the WATTS migrated to Chicago in 1870. I found in my house death records for Hattie Watts (d: 1874); Mary Watts (d: 1926) but I don't know who they were. Birtthplace for both was Lebanon, KY. I assume they were related to Philip in some way. If anyone in Chicago or KY has info, please contact me at: a-car@webtv.net. From: rexmclrn@door.net (Rex & Rebecca McLaurin) Lori, I would like to subscribe to your newletter, please. My line starts with John Watts, as noted below, and his daughter Katherine who married Moses L. Hornsby. I've just discovered my connection to John Watts and would appreciate any help. These findings are not news to the Hemings descendents who have know all along they were descendanted directly from Thomas Jefferson. Many of us have Watts ancestors who lived and associated with the Jefferson family. Evidence of this comes from deeds signed by Peter Jefferson, Thomas's father, and several other indirect marriage ties. Some that have been discussed before in this newsletter. Dabney Carr, close friend and brother-in-law of Thomas Jefferson, mother was Barbara Overton. Any of you descended from Jacob Watts and Elizabeth Durrett are also descended from Barbara Overton's mother, Margaret Overton. (By the way it was also suspected the Carr brother, Samuel and Peter who lived on the plantation could have been with Sally but were ruled out with the DNA findings.) Anyway here is the question. There is a card entry in the Library of Virginia with the following information. Has anyone seen this information? Does anyone live close enough they could go and copy these bible records? I would love to see what type of information they hold! The marriage record states: Mulins, Ase m. Peggy Watts (d. of Jacob) 08 Jun 1816, Jacob Gilder bondsman, Ro. Love, clk (witness). This marriage took place in Haywood County, NC. Asa was born 15 Nov 1797 and was the only son of Dennis Mullins and Lydia Keyes. He was raised in Burke Co., NC in the Pleasant Garden area. Dennis died ca. 1805-1809 and Lydia remarried John Paul Cobb. Lydia and John Paul had one son William Alfred Cobb (b. 1809). William Alfred Cobb, my Asa Mullins' half brother, married Charlotte Henson, daughter of Daniel Henson. In 1810 John Paul Cobb and Lydia Keys were in Montgomery County, NC. The census numbers suggest that the family included John Paul Cobb, Lydia (Keyes) Cobb, Asa Mullins (John Paul Cobb's stepson; son of Lydia Keys and Dennis Mullins), William Alfred Cobb, and possibly a son of John Paul by an earlier marriage. Also present on the 1810 Montgomery Co, NC census was a Jacob Watts in close proximity, as well as various members of the Henson family. Other Montgomery County Census data for Watts: 1800 - Jacob Watts and Andrew Watts; 1820 - no census, destroyed by fire; 1830 - Moses Watts and Thomas Watts; 1840 - Moses Watts and Sampson Watts. Montgomery Co., NC was formed from the northern portion of Anson Co., NC. There were other early Watts in Anson County including Benjamin Watts and Malachi Watts. The proximity of the Cobb, Watts, and Henson families is significant for me. The Henson family appears to be the progenitors of the Henson family that ultimately went to Haywood Co., NC where Daniel Henson's daughter Charlotte married William Alfred Cobb, half-brother to my Asa Mullins who married Margarett Watts. So it appears that Montgomery Co., NC was where these two families converged before going to Haywood County, NC. Both Asa Mullins and William Alfred Cobb must have met their future brides here. My Asa Mullins was still living in Haywood County, NC at the 1835 12th District Poll, but was in Monroe County, TN by the 1840 census. My Asa Mullins and Margarett Watts ultimately migrated to Monroe County, Tennessee by 1840, where earlier Watts were enumerated. In a partial roll of the census of 1835 of Cherokees within the limits of Tennessee (includes Hamilton, McMinn, Monroe Counties,TN) there were three Watts listed. Later his heirs, Choa, Nuna, Catalia John, Mink Watts, Doubletree Watts, Forked Tail Watts and Nelly wre paid $1,000 for their land in 1825. Matthew McGhee was the attorney for these Indians." I am currently attempting to tie my Watts to this Watts line. Hopefully this information will help others researching the Cherokee Watts lines. I feel like there might be some connection between this information and the information submitted to issues #51 and #53 of your Newsletter by Lorettahen. There is mention of the names Jake Watts and Moses Watts. I thought that the Jake Watts might be a nickname for Jacob Watts, the name of my Margarett Watt's father. This was reinforced in Issue #53 where it is mentioned that Eli Watts (b. 1795) son of John Watts (b. 1765) married Rebecca Watts (b. 1795), whose father's name was Jacob Watts, who was probably an uncle of Eli Watts. Finally, since the names Jacob Watts and Moses Watts were both found in Montgomery Co., NC census enumerations, it seemed even more promising. The last piece of information I had that seems to connect with that submitted by Lorettahen: In her material, there was a Forked Tail Watts mentioned who was said to be 1) the grandfather of Jim Watts, Garrett Watts and Old John Watts, and 2) was the great-grandfather of James Britton Watts. Forked Tail Watts was one of the descendants of Old Bark of Chota who sold land in Monroe County, Tennessee in 1828, which had been granted to Old Bark of Chota. This is where Asa Mullins and Margarett (Watts) show up on the 1840 census for the first time. Mullins family tradition has said that Asa and Margarett moved to Monroe County, TN because of Margarett (Watts). I have been unable to find where Asa Mullins obtained his first land. I hope this information, some of which is ongoing research, will be of help to someone. I would love to hear from others who believe that this information ties in with their lines. Also, if anyone has information related to Forked Tail Watts or Old Bark of Chota I would love to correspond. In a new reference (Brent Yanusdi Cox: Heart of the Eagle, 1999), pg. 224, it states that Old Bark was from the Overhill and went to Virginia in 1756. He obviously returned at some point since he obtained land in Monroe County, TN under the treaties of 1817 and/or 1819. Forked Tail Watts was one of his descendants, but the exact relationship is unknown. He was listed, as shown above, as a full-blood Cherokee on the 1835 census.
