YOUNG TASSEL  AKA JOHN WATTS

The following E-mail letters were forwarded to me by WildWolfWm@aol.com   They provide interesting information on John Watts who married into the Cherokee Nation.  I have taken the liberty of editing out some personal information
Lori

From: HudThom@aol.com
To: WildWolfWm@aol.com

Hello Ge-Ya-Ta-Hi Wa-Ya Wi-Li,
Your query was forewarded to me.  If you are from Young Tassel your line is as follows.

Chief Amatoya Moytoy of Chota b ca 1635-45=Quatsy of Tellico of the Wolf Clan. Their 7th born daughter Oo-Yo-Sti Polly [Quali]=unidentified as yet.  Her son Tarchee the Long Warrior of Tellico=Ailsey No. 2 of the Paint Clan.  Their daughter Gi-Yo-Sti Ko-Yo-Hei=John Watts Sr.  [John Watts No. 1].  Their son Kunokeskie Chief young Tassel John Watts Jr. [John Watts No.2].

Young Tassel did NOT marry Onitositah.  Onitositah is one of the several names of Chief Kahyuanteehee Onitostah/Onitositaii Old Tassel the First to Kill.  He is the great uncle of Young Tassel.  Old Tassel had a son called Little Tassel, who also took the name John Watts [John Watts No.3].  This is common place among the Cherokee people.

Old Tassel's father is NOT Great Eagle.  Willenawa/Wollenawoa Great Eagle called William the Eagle is the son to the third born daughter of Amatoya Moytoy and Quatsy.  His father is not yet known, but he is a cousin to Young tassel.

Amatoya Moytoy of Chota should not be confused with another of his grandsons, Principal Chief Moytoy Pigeon of Tellico.  The only descendant we have yet found for Moytoy Pigeon is Amonoscottie Dreadful Water.

There are several John Watts.  John Watts Jr. ie John Watts No. 2 is Young Tassel.  John Watts No.3, the son of Old Tassel, is Little Tassel.

So, we have Old Tassel, Little Tassel, Young Tassel, and yet another cousin Corn Tassel; all different persons.

Another matter has confused the issue for some people.  Both Old Tassel First to Kill and his nephew Young Tassel were members of the Chicamaguah Band; that is they supported the British in the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
A band is not a CLAN, it is a political group.   The seven Cherokee Clans are the
Wolf Clan
             Deer Clan
                    Bird Clan
                           Panther Clan
                               Paint Clan
                                  Blue Holly Clan
                                      and Wild Potato
Clan.....................................

I hope that this is helpful to you. I do have data on other family members, but I do not have the descendancy records for Young Tassel John Watts Jr.
[John Watts No.2].

Hello Mary,
You are difinately Kin to Old Tassel though perhaps not descended directly from him.   Old Tassel was born 1700 and died in 1788. He was of the Wolf Clan.  His son Little Tassel 'took' the name John Watts; perhaps in honor of his cousin Young Tassel John Watts Jr. [John Watts no.3].  Little Tassel was born Willistown, Alabama , and died at Fort Payne, Alabama in 1803.  He is said to have been Chief of the Cherokee in North Carolina.  He married Wurtagua, who may have been a descendant of Attakullakulla.   His son Garrett Z. Watts is Patchez's ancestor.  You may be from Little Tassel or from Young Tassel.   Patzhez gave me a partial descendancy chart from Little Tassel, but I have nothing on the descendants of Young Tassel.   This is a very large and extended family;  I have been working on this line for several years.  There is a book going to press at this time which deals with Dragging Canoe and the Chicamaguah Band.  The author tells me that there is some genealogical data in this text.  The price is $18.50 including postage.  {NO, I am not the author}...Write to..

                                           Phone 901-686-7097.

I am hoping that Brent's book will fill in some of the gaps in the family records.  I have a chart which shows over 200 members of the extended family. I will be gald to send you copy via snail mail if you would like to have it. It's work in progress as whenever I fill in one gap I then want to fill in the next.  Also, Native American names can be a problem as all of our ancestors
had more than one name; some as many as twenty.  You can start out with what you consider to be five or six   different people only to discover that it is one person know bu five or six different names.  I hope that this may help you in the future.  If you have any questions I will be glad to answer them to the best of my ability.

I hope that you didn't mind my first greeting to you; that was WildWolfWm in Cherokee........No. I don't speak the language; I just have a couple of dictionaries.

This is the story my gradpa Watts told me just a couple of years befor he died.  Seems like there were four brothers who came from England and settled in the land of Red Clay. I guess he means Ala or OK. anyway his gradfather was James Brit Watts, and we are supposed to be releated to the War Chief John Watts,  his mother was so fastenated by General Lee that she named his father General Lee.  They settled  in Vian, OK. Both my gradfather and gradmother are both bried there.  My gradfathers name is Richard Carl Watts.  They lived here in CA.  I have a letter sent from James Brit Watts, who claims to be releated to Chief John Watts. Here is the letter: This leter is written to his sister Sarah Elizabeth and her husband   James talks about the rich rivers and her and her children are or where at that time entitled to their part of the Cherokee strip.  In this letter he waants his sister to go to Russel Gorden and take evidence of the Watts' being of Cherokee Blood.    Let him tell you what he knows of Old John Watts, Jim Watts, and Garrett Watts, also what he knows about  Jake Watts and Moses Watts.  I want to know everything in regard to the Watts', by blood being 1/2 Cherokee  Or at least I have 3 witnesses with court seals who have testafied ot old John Watts as beig 1/2 Cherokee.  This is the statement from RGordon,  I Russel Gorden do her by in the presents of all men testify that I am acquanited with the Watts family and have been for a great number of years.  They wre decent Dutch and 1/2 Cherokee by blood.  Old Forked Tail WAtts as I have reliable information was the grandfather of Jim Watts, Garrett Watts and Old John Watts. whitch was borned in Buncambe County, or Carolina Territory, was blood by 1/2 Cherokee.  Jake WAtts and Moses Watts as I remember were sons of Old Jim Watts.  Eli Watts WAtts   Levi Watts Bill Watts, Josey WAtts and John Watts were sons of Old John Watts of old Carolina Territory.  The Old John Watts moved from Carolina to Alabama Territory, in the year of 1828 and die there in 1843, him being to far advanced in age to go futher West with his people,  He remained acitizen of the U>S>Government and died?.  The Watts' families in staring out from North Carolina territory scattered greathly and westwardly, some in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama territory. Whether any of the WAtts came west with the
tribe or I am not sure, as the Cherokee people are very slow to correspond with anyone.  This is about the best of the letter.  This was sent to me from my Aunt Ruby who live out her in CA.  I stall have two grat aunts living in OK.  One of the names is Trudie, I don't know her married name as I have only met her once in my life and that was when I was 10 ys. old.  Hope this helps you.  Maybe between the three of us we can figure this thing out. If you want I will send you some more of it.  I have a complete record supposed to be of the Watts family.  I have heard that I am Indian all my life on two sides of my Watts family and on my mothers side of the family.  My Hendon family doesn't know any thing about the Willams side of the family but that is another  story.
Thanks LOrettahen@aol.com
