So this is issue number 50! That is 50 issues
of genealogical Watts information. I hope most of you have found
something of interest in at least one or more of the issue. I know
many of you have found and expanded your lines over the past couple years.
Keep sharing your information. That is what keeps the newsletter
going. For the first time in years, I am going to have weekends off.
Therefore I am going to have to change the dates of publication for the
newsletter slightly. You will probably not receive it on a Friday
but on the first and third weekend of the month.

Do you know about a Clarence Williams in AR who is writing a book on the
WATTS? Someone shared this information with me. I used the e-mail
address she gave me to reserve a book, but it was returned. I don't
have a snail-mail address, but I sure would like to make contact with him
for a book. I thought you might have an address for him. The e-mail
address I had and was returned not delivered is:cwilliams@ozip.com, hope,

ARTHUR THOMAS WATTS
31 Aug 1837 - 28 Jun 1921
Arthur was a jurist. Born in Covington County, Mississippi, Arthur
was the son of John and Patience (Lott) Watts. Arthur received his
early education in public and private schools in Mississippi. He
studied law in the office if Judge John McNair. Admitted to the bar
in 1858, Watts practiced for two years in Texas until the start of the
Civil War. Enlisting in the 16th Mississippi regiment, he
engaged in duty with the Army in Northern Virginia. Watts engaged in
combat in the battles of Spottsboro, Bloody Angle, Malvern Hill, the
second Manassas, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Chancellorsville, Spottsylvania
Court House, Cold Harbor, and the Wilderness. When the war ended he
continued practicing law in Livingston, Texas. In 1872 he was
elected to the state legislature and sat in the famous "liberating
session" of 1873 which ejected the Negro police and the carpetbaggers
from the state. In later years Watts moved to Weatherford and
Dallas, Texas. Watts was appointed in 1880 one of the three judges
of the Commission of Appeals, a body formed to relived the supreme court
of its caseload. Watts settled in Beaumont, Texas in 1901, the year
of one of the state's largest oil booms. Voluminous oil litigation's
required the establishment of another court in Jefferson County, and Watts
was appointed judge of the 60th district court but declined the position.
In 1870 Watts married Mary Victory, and they had six children:
Mattie, Commissa, Rose, Mary Ellen, Sam T., and Arthur P.
