Since it has been almost two years since I submitted my query, may I insert it again in one of your upcoming newsletters. The family history had alwasy been that our Watts ancestors came from Alsace Lorraine, France. But, when I pulled the funeral home papers for Levi Watts, it said his Father, Frederick Watts was born in Kentucky. Descendants of Frederick Watts. Does anyone see a connection to this line. Thanks, Gloria Kemp.

It has been over a year since I have posted a Watts Query on my family and all the Cornelius Watts info made me want to try it again. I decend from Josiah Watts b. 1805 Va. I do not have his parents, wife, or siblings. He and his children all wound up in Tishomingo/Alcorn/Prentiss MS area. My 92 year old grandfather told me when I was in high school and asked that the Watts family came from Wells. Since I can't trace Josiah Watts backwards, I would like to try tracing the decendants of Cornielus Watts forward and see if I can find any likely branches of the family to investigate. Right Now I would bet on Cornelius' son William m. Charity Elleyze. My thought there being that I have an Uncle who's name was Elzy and I've always wondered where that came from - assumed it was a surename in generations past. So my requesst is for additional information on the grandsons of Cornelious Watts.

I am seeking information about the ancestry of my husbands great-grandfather Henry Watts who was married ca 1910/12 in Meridian MS to Agnes Harwell, b 1891 in Meridian, her 1st husband. They probably were not married very long. Henry is named as the father of Walter Flynt Watts, b. 1912 in Lauderdale County, MS. He is probably also the father of Randolph Watts b ca 1913/14 who died as an infant.

Agnes Harwell Culpepper died in 1985 in Meridian MS. She had been married to her 3rd husband for over 40 years...so we don't have much inside family information to go on.

I would appreciate any help you might be able to give.

Collateral Families: Watts and Lott

Many of the descendants of John A. Watts are related to or even surnamed Lott. Thomas, John A.'s oldest son married Elizabeth Lott, and there were other marriages in later generations. While there is some evidence that John A. Watts' ancestors came from the VA/MD eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, so far
as I know, no one has information on the Lott family before Elizabeth's family. Since the easiest way to find an ancestor is sometimes to go further back and try to find descendants I keep my eyes open for older references to families. Recently, I ran across the following reference to Lott:

Wm Berry Sr, Wm Berry Jr, his wife Naomi Walley and their son John Berry had numerous real estate transactions in Kent co Del from 1680 to 1718. Names showing up during these transactions were as follows: Berry's Range, Robert Porter, Ephrim Herman(Harman), John Brinckloe, James Steel, Thomas Berry, Burburys Lott , Samuel Burbury, Richard Mitchell, James Maxwell, Cowhill, Dover River, James Ridley, Arthur Meston, Robert French, Andrew Caldwell, Wm Maxwell, Robert Maxwell and Francis Allen.

The following is a small sample of the Book by W.C. Watts copied from a site Don Bleach don@bleach.net maintains and Found at: http://www.awwwsome.com/dab/genealogy/watts/book/
I would highly recommend you visit the site and see the remainder of the book. Please also e-mail him with a big thanks! Also a big thanks to Neal Watts for finding the site and passing the information along.

I don't know anything about W.C. WATTS, other than what he mentions in the first couple of pages about himself. There is unfortunately NO source code for this book. So far, I am guessing that this book was printed in 1965 or close to it because of birth dates found within.

I haven't a clue as to when I'll be finished with this project, but I will get it done! Feel free to check out this site every once in a while (once a month) and monitor it's progress. It will probably take me quite a while to finish as there are a total of 355 pages that I have to scan and proof read for accuracy from the original writer's works. I will not attempt to correct any typos or misspellings as I want to represent what the original writer wrote and not my interpretation.

THE FIRST HISTORY OF WATTS' FAMILY OF ALEXANDER COUNTY IN ENGLAND.

GEN. PG. PG.
I I I In the year 1211 A. D. during the 13th year of King
John, there lived Sir Michael Le Fleming who bad five
children as follows:
II I I Sir Wm. Le Fleming
II I I Sir Richard Le Fleming-Had a daughter Godith Le Fleming
II I I Rev. Daniel Le Fleming
II I I Anselm Le Fleming
II I I Jordan Le Fleming
III I I Godith Le Fleming, daughter of Sir Wm. Le Fleming, married William De Esenby. She received from her father three carucates of land in Agarsslith and was a benefactress to the priory of St. Bees in Cumberland. (No Other Record)
III I I Sir Richard Le Fleming, second son of Sir Michael Le Fleming, called also Flandrensis and Flameng in several places and records, received the honor of Knighthood and seated himself at Caernavon Castle in the manor of Beckermet which Castle and Manor with the
homage and service wards and reliefs of all the free-holders of Frisington, Rottington, Weddekar, Kelton, Salter, Arlochden and Burringg with the lands in Cumberland and the lands in Lancashire were given to him by his father, some of which estates were, as late as 1811
enjoyed by descendents of this family, either in lineal or collateral succession. Sir Richard died during the term of King John, and was succeeded by his only son.  Sir John Le Fleming of Beckermet, Knight, who conveyed to his Richard by a deed without date the land
which his father had given him in Coupland. He also gave the patronage of the rectory of Arlochden and the land in Great Beckermet to the Abby of Chaldine in the 26th year of King Henry III 1241 A. D. Also, the Advowson of the church of St. John the Baptist of Beckermet was granted to this Abby which was confirmed by Archbishop of York 1262 A. D.  Sir John died in the rein of King Henry III Cira l250 and was buried in the Abby of Caldne to which he had been a benefactor. It is stated that the Abby contained a very ancient statue in freestone of a man in armor a frett of six pieces upon his shield, lying upon his back with a sword by his side, his hands elevated in a praying posture and his legs across which probably were so placed from the taking upon him the cross, after having been disposed of all his worldly goods and having been engaged in the Holy Wars (of the Crusaders) and which statue was placed here, most probably in the memory of this Sir John Le Fleming.  (The following quotation is from Washington Irvins sketch book which reads in part)("A scene in Westministers Abby, beautifully illustrative of the character of the Crusaders, interesting to the Watts family as the coat of arms was granted to one of them") "I pause to contemplate a tomb on which lay the effigy of a Knight in complete armor, large buckler was on one arm, the hands were pressed together in supplication on the breast, the face was almost covered by the moron, the legs crossed in token of the warrior's having engaged in the Holy Wars. It was the tomb of a Crusader."

The Watts family claims descent from the old Yorkshire house of Le Fleming of Wath which appears to be a branch of the original family of Cumberland.

Sir John Le Fleming, lord of Wath on Dearn Yorkshire, who died 14 year of Edward II reign 1321 A. D. left by Joan, his wife, daughter of Walter De Fauconberg, three sons Viz.

The second son, Ranier Le Flemings, called Rainer De Wath, Chevalyr was in the Scottish wars in the retinue of Lord Percy. He married Ada, daughter of heir of Thomas De Bethume, and had with otherr, issue a son.

Thomas Wattys, who was plaintiff in an action at law against William De Stotesbury, William De Lovell and others, for the recovery of the manor of Whitefield, the last year of Henry VI 1471 A. D. By his wife Alice, heiress to the estate of Beby, Liecestershire. Issue follows:
