The past two weeks have added twenty-two new Watts researchers! We are now
over 200 people strong researching the surname of Watts. I have been busy
working on a every name index for the newsletters but this is going to
take some time. I also put together a index of contents of the past
newsletters since we started in 1996. I will print portions of this in
newsletters so we can see what records have been covered and what we still
need to cover. Without your help of contribution, this newsletter would
not be possible. Congratulate yourselves!. Lori Contents: 1. Members Lines 2. Queries 3. Clues From the Names of Deed Witnesses 4. Garrett Z. Watts 5. Issac Watts 6. There were more children but I am now sure which woman is there mother. Other Children are as follows: Nealy Watts, Charles Watts, James Watts, Annie Watts Leverette, Lillian Watts Young, Margie Watts Rogers, Mary Watts Harper. John Watts fathers name was listed as J. W. Watts and his mothers name was not listed on Death Certificate. His brothers are Joe Watts and George Watts. That is all of the information I have to date. I hope someone recognizes it. Mary From: high@thegrid.net (Karen High) Most of my information came from my gg-aunt's diary. Her name was Cecilia Letitia WATTS, born 1870, died 1953, lived in New York City/Brooklyn, New York all her life. My uncle has the entire original diary along with a family bible from which some of the earlier information came. I have a smaller copy of the diary which Auntie wrote for me and mailed to my parents in 1948 when I was born, giving the family tree portion. Hugh Stuart WATTS, nee WATT, son of John WATT of Grennock, Scotland was born in 1805 on a ship off the coast of Sandy Hook, New Jersey while his parents were returning to Grennock, Scotland from a visit to America. Hugh was raised and educated in Scotland. At some point, Hugh Stuart and one of his three brothers came to America (Hugh settled in New York City, NY, eventually moving to Savannah, Georgia, and his brother settled "in the South".). The two boys' father, John WATT admonished them, "Dinna came hame with an "S" on your name." As this advice was disregarded, the name became "WATT" instead of "WATT". I don't know what Hugh's brother's name was and I haven't yet determined which of the John WATT's of Scotland is their father. Hugh Stuart WATT/ WATTS married Rhoda DORSET aka DORSETT on July 29, 1827 in New York City. I have many newspaper articles from the Savannah Daily Georgian about Hugh, his relatives and partners while he was in Savannah, GA. He and Rhoda eventually died there, Rhoda on April 26, 1840 at the age of 32 (suicide) and Hugh about 7 years later ( I can't locate the date at the moment but have it somewhere - I know, you've heard of people like me!) . Children of Hugh Stuart WATT/WATTS and Rhoda DORSET/DORSETT were taken back to NYC and raised by their maternal grandparents, Joseph Isaac DORSETT and Maria SCHENCK DORSETT in New York City, after their mother, Rhoda's death. The children are as follows: John WATTS, b. August 16, 1831 in New York City, NY, d. June 7, 1907 in NYC. SEE INFORMATION ON JOHN WATTS BELOW. Henry WATTS, b. August 14, 1833, New York City, NY. Catherine Maria (Kate) WATTS, b. May 1, 1837, New York, NY. Married Franklin ELDREDGE. Their children were John Henry, Rhoda (married name Moxham), Kitty and Minerva ELDREDGE. Baby boy WATTS, was one month and 8 days old when mother, Rhoda DORSET WATTS died on April 26, 1840. Baby died when he was one year and 3 days old. Copied verbatim from bible of Rhoda SCHENCK, (bought October 9, 1806 - price 4 dollars). My uncle's footnote: "Copied verbatim but math doesn't check out." John WATTS, b. August 16, 1831 in New York City, NY, d. June 7, 1907 in NYC, married Fannie MACDONALD on May 8, 1860 in NYC. Their children were as follows: Cecilia Letitia WATTS, born May12, 1861 in New York, NY, died November 15, 1953, never married. John Henry WATTS I (Harry), born August 2, 1864, d. March 14, 1952 in Miami, Florida., married Florence CAREW on April 27, 1891 in NY. The couple moved to Bergenfield, New Jersey, not far from NYC, and then to Teaneck, New Jersey, prior to moving to Miami, Florida about 1920. SEE BELOW FOR CHILDREN Abram Macdonald WATTS (Don), born June 4, 1867 d. Nov. 24(?), 1950 in Miami, Florida, married Mary Eady? and/or Georgia (?)(I have it somewhere in the diary). Children were John Edmund WATTS, b. 1895 or 1896, d. July 1897 in NY, and Alice Millicent WATTS, b. Nov. 1897. Florence Letitia WATTS, b. September 19, 1875 in NY and d. July 1887 in NY. CHILDREN OF JOHN HENRY WATTS I AND FLORENCE CAREW: John Henry (Jackie or Jack) WATTS II, born and lived in NJ and NY, d. Miami, FL m. Audrey CORNWALL in 1934, no children. From: Pat Lundy Pat48084@aol.com My Watts connection is: Susanna George b. 13 Sept 1758 Goochland Co., Va.; living 1831 Edmonson Co., KY. She married first, George Holland Jr. and second William Johnson 18 Aug 1788 Goochland Co., Va. Her parents were James George b. About 1710 in Middlesex Co., Va; died 18 May 1781 in Goochland Co., Va. He married Agatha Watts b. 12 Jan 1707 Middlesex Co., Va; died 20 June 1784 Goochland Co., Va. Her parents were Hugh Watts who married Johanna Marye(Mayre) 29 Jan 1683/4 New Kent Co., Va. Listed in Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800 An LDS record says that his parents are William and Charity Watts but I don't have anything more on them. Pat From: JamCrock@aol.com I have very scant information on my Watts. Perhaps someone out there can help me. Cynthia A. Watts was born about 1830 in Kentucky, according to the census. She married William Asbury. Cynthia's mother's name may have been Jane, born 1802 in VA. That's all I have and, again, it's not much. I look forward to hearing from anyone about her. James A. Crockett From: rlwatts@webtv.net Richard Watts In America, my family line starts in Boston, MA and goes to St. George, ME. Most of the relatives are still in the New England area, except for a branch with the HOPE name that is now in the mid-west. I haven't found many people with information on my WATTS branch. I started doing research two years ago as a Winter project for early retirement. Spent the first year looking at microfilm, etc, at the National Archives Branch in the Boston area and the Massachusetts Archives in Boston (Maine was part of Mass in the early days). All I had was a few hand-written notes from a deceased relative. This past Winter I gained access to the internet and have been collecting data on my simple web page at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3380 should anyone be interested. The page also contains other info besides WATTS. Currently I am trying to connect from my 5g grandparents back to Ireland/Scotland prior to about 1740. They were William Watts and Margaret (McLellan) Watts. It appears that Margaret my have been born while her parents were in transit to America 1717-1720. Regards, Dick Watts ******************************************** Queries Subj: CREEL/WATTS Fauquier County, Virginia 1800-1850 From: hsknight@clsp.uswest.net (Glenn A. Knight) My g-g-grandfather, Sylvester Hughlett CREEL, was born 26 July 1830 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Unfortunately, by 1850 Sylvester had moved on, so he doesn't appear in the 1850 census for Fauquier County. According to the 1830 census (microfilm at the Rocky Mountain Region National Archives branch, Denver, drawer 17/8, #194, extracted 23 July 1997 by the author) there were three CREEL families in Fauquier County in 1830: William, Elijah, and George. It would appear that William was 60-70 (his son William also have been in this household) and his wife was 40-50. Elijah was between 30-40, as was the oldest female in the household. There were six children under 10 in Elijah's household. George was 50-60 years of age, but there were some young children in the household. According to information I have received, William was the father of George and Elijah. William would have been born between 1760 and 1770, and he married Rachel GRIFFITH. George would have been born between 1780 and 1790, and he married Molly BALL. Elijah would have been born between 1790 and 1800, and he married Susannah HUGHLETT. Sylvester CREEL came to Kansas in 1853, according to family materials, and was accompanied by his brother, Hedgeman CREEL, his sister Rachel, and her husband, Peyton WATTS, as well as his sister Marjorie, and her husband John WATTS. Apparently Sylvester had an older brother, George, who was born between 1820 and 1825, who married Catherine JEFFRIES, and who may still have been alive in 1879. I would greatly appreciate any information on which CREEL family was Sylvester's, as well as any information on the WATTS family, which apparently married into the CREEL family twice. Glen From: WLWMEGAWAT@aol.com Could you please put this query in the WATTS ONLINE? People have speculated that my Susannah _?_ d. 1818 Smith Co TN who married Daniel Witcher b. 1746 (Pittsylvania Co area) VA could have been a WATTS. Many also believe she was a KEY. I believe she was the daughter of Robert DALTON & Mary KEY. Dr. Marcus Key, renoun Key family researcher can find no Susannah KEY or Susannah WATTS who could have been my Susannah. Susannah was probably b. around 1745-1750. Would any one know of a Susannah Watts who could have married Daniel Witcher and where was she from? Who were her parents? Carmelita ******************************************** Clues From the Names of Deed Witnesses The following is from a Minnesota Genealogical Newsletter. "In the lower left corner of most old deeds you will find two to four witnesses. The first one is always from the husband's side, the next two from the wife's side. That is to protect her one-half dower rights under the law - Nothing you will ever use will give greater clues to maiden names." ******************************************** Subj: Garrett Z. Watts GARRETT Z. WATTS was born Jan. 8 1756 Caroline, Bowling Green, Va. CHIEF JOHN WATTS was born 1750 AL. This is from the book OLD FRONTIERS by JOHN P. BROWN I'm sending this so that all the researchers who attribute CHIEF JOHN WATTS also known as CHIEF YOUNG TASSEL can finally get their research correct. Virginia microfiche from the LDS files state that GARRETT Z.WATTS fasther is CHIEF"LITTLE"(LITTLE) TASSEL. LITTLE and YOUNG are NOT the same name!!!!!!! Please look it up for yourselves. From: artgranny@worldnet.att.net (Phyllis Stovall) ******************************************** Isaac Watts 1674-1748 (I have had several people over the years ask about Isaac Watts, the famous Watts who wrote hymns. Below is a article I found while searching the net. It is printed for your benefit by permission) Born: July 17, 1674, Southampton, England. Died: November 25, 1748. Isaac Watts wrote some 600 hymns in his lifetime. Buried: Bunhill Fields Cemetery, London, England. Hymnist John Bunyan is buried nearby. The Father of English Hymnody PICK UP ALMOST ANY modern hymnal, look in the index listing the composers of the hymns, and the name "Watts, Isaac" has a long list of hymns beside it. In his long life, Watts wrote over 600 hymns, and many of them continue to be used by English-speaking Christians to worship and praise the same Saviour Watts loved and served. Isaac was born July 27, 1674 at Southampton, England, the eldest of nine children. His father was a Dissenter from the Anglican Church and on at least one occasion was thrown in jail for not following the Church of England. Isaac followed his father's strongly biblical faith. Isaac was a very intelligent child who loved books and learned to read early. He began learning Latin at age four and went on to learn Greek, Hebrew, and French as well. From an early age Isaac had a propensity to rhyming, and often even his conversation was in rhyme. His father became quite annoyed at this and told him to stop. When the rhyming persisted, the father started to whip the boy, and little Isaac cried out: "O father, do some pity take And I will no more verses make." When he was seven, Isaac wrote an acrostic poem on his name which reflected his theological training: I am a vile polluted lump of earth So I've continued ever since my birth; Although Jehovah grace does give me, As sure this monster Satan will deceive me. Come therefore, Lord, from Satan's claws relieve me. Because Isaac would not follow the national Church of England, he could not attend the Universities of Cambridge or Oxford. Instead, he attended an academy sponsored by Independent Christians. Af ter completing his formal schooling, Watts spent five years as a tutor. During those years he began to devote himself more diligently than before to the study of the Scriptures. In 1707 he published his first edition of Hymns and Spiritual Songs. Ugly Isaac Though he had a beautiful soul, apparently Isaac Watts was not much to look at. He was frail and often sickly. His head seemed too large for his five foot tall body; his small, piercing eyes and hooked nose did not enhance his appearance any. A lady one fell in love with Isaac by reading his poetry and a correspondence ensued. Whe she met his face to face, however, she was very disillusioned, though he fell in love with her. He asked her to marry him, but her reply was, "Mr. Watts, I only wish I could admire the casket (jewelry box) as much as I admire the jewel." Watts never married, though the two remained good friends for over 30 years. Fever Forces New Direction For a few years Watts served as an assistant and then pastor to an Independent congregation in London. A violent and continual fever from which he never recovered forced him to leave the pastorate. Sir Thomas Abney received Watts into his home, and Sir Thomas' family continued to provide a home and serve as Watts' patrons for the next 36 years! Though naturally quick to resentment and anger, the Lord used Watts' sufferings to produce a gentle, modest, and charitable spirit. Out of his compassion, one-third of his small allowance was given to the poor. Watts' tenderness to children can be seen reflected in his lovely Divine Songs for Children, published in 1715. Beholding the "Brighter Discoveries" Watts' most published book was his Psalms of David, first published in 1719. In his poetic paraphrases of the psalms, Watts adapted the psalms for use by the Church and made David speak "the language of a Christian." Watts explained his method, . . . Where the Psalmist describes religion by the fear of God, I have often joined faith and love to it. Where he speaks of the pardon of sin through the mercies of God, I have added the merits of a Savior. Where he talks of sacrificing goats or bullocks, I rather choose to mention the sacrifice of Christ, the lamb of God . . Where he promises abundance of wealth, honor, and long life, I have changed some of these typical blessings for grace, glory, and life eternal, which are brought to light by the Gospel, and promised in the New Testament. And I am fully satisfied, that more honor is done to our blessed Saviour by speaking his name, his graces, his actions, in his own language, according to the brighter discoveries he hath now made, than by going back again to the Jewish forms of worship, and the language of types and figures. Examples of Watts' method can be seen in his paraphrases of Psalm 72 into the hymn "Jesus Shall Reign Wher'er the Sun," Psalm 90 into "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," and Psalm 98 into "Joy to the World." Many Thanks, Ben! Benjamin Franklin first published Watts' psalm paraphrases in America in 1729. His hymns were first published in Boston in 1739. Watts' hymns gloried in the power, wisdom, and goodness of his majestic God. During the American revivals of 1735-1739, known as the Great Awakening, George Whitefield used Watts' hymns and songs in his meetings. They were well-loved by those Americans of the Revolutionary period. Multi-Talented Man Besides over 600 hymns, Watts published 52 other works, including a book of logic used in the universities, books on grammar, pedagogy, ethics, psychology, astronomy, geography, three volumes of sermons, and 29 treatises on theology. After his death on November 25, 1748, a monument to Watts was erected in Westminster Abbey. His greatest monument, however, are the hymns to his God still used by Christ's church. Why not look in your hymnal's index and notice how many familiar hymns were penned by the Father of English hymns?
