Greetings Our list of interested Watts researchers keep growing. I will include members lines each week but it may be some time before all lines are printed. Also keep those queries and articles coming as they are the lifeline of the newsletter. Please send me copies of replies to queries or information sent to members you connect with through the newsletter. This information can be printed in a future newsletters and help others who may also be interested. One last item...would each of you just take a minute and message me as to the length of the letter when you receive it. I am trying to adjust the length so that everyone can receive it in full. Thank you. Lori ******************************************** Contents: 1. Members Lines 2. Last Will and Testament of Stephen Watts of Bucks County, Pa 3. Watts Marriages in Virginia - Part 3 of 6 4. New England Historical and Genealogical Register For the year 1866 Vol XX ******************************************** MEMBERS LINES 1. Martin Decker - mdecker@ix.netcom.com I am looking for information about Robert Watts in PA and specifically in St. Petersburg, PA. He is looking to connect with others researching in Pennsylvania. I am rather new at this genealogy business. My sister-in-law is doing most of it and I thought I'd try to help some. She has a lot of information on the Watts line and I am going to get it and sent it to you for the newsletter. Please let me know if I can also send it by US Mail to you. I will try to put it in email form if that would be better...She does not have a computer yet. She has the lines using the genealogy forms and copies of other books and articles. She actually has more on the mother's side of our Watts line (Dakin or Daken/Faust or Foust/Dittman/Ashbough/Eschbach line traced to 1738 coming here from Germany) because we cannot find out much about the father's side past two generations ago. That is why I thought we'd try the internet-we have traced a Robert Watts born in Jacksonville, Florida on September 17, 1885 (this is my grandfather-got this information from the marriage certificate) but have no other information on him except he lived in Ohio and Pennsylvania for a time. He had 3 sons: Robert (my father), John and Bill. He was divorced from my grandmother (who remarried) and then lost track of. According to a statement in the divorce record of 1922 his mother lived in New Jersey around that time. No other information is known by family members. I
keep hoping someone out there might have a clue. We recently told that we
cannot get a copy of his birth certificate from Florida because these
kinds of records are "sealed" and available only to the person.
Families can petition the court in Florida, but it is expensive. Do you
have any information about this? I greatly enjoyed the newsletter. I am still looking for my great great grandfather's family. I have no information about them before they moved into Livingston Parish, La. just before 1850. My great great grandfather was George Washington Watts. He served in the Civil War and was elected to the Police Jury of Livingston Parish in the 1870's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please keep me on your e-mail list. Thanks again!! 3. Married Catherine Coonradt - born 26 Sep 1795; died 8 Feb 1871. William was a physician. Catherine supposedly had breast cancer and was cured by her husband without surgery. She lived many years and in good health. The family told of many people he cured. They would come and stay in the home for a period of time. He made his own medicine - grew many plants. He had a herb room where he cured and stored the dried plants. They had the following children: ...1-Henry - born 1816 ...2-Philip - born 1818; died 1850 ...3-MaryAnn - born 1819; died 1836 ...4-Sidney - born 1823 ...5-Catherine - born 1829; died 25 Feb 1842 ...6-Harriett - born 30 June 1831. Married Thomas Snow ...7-Elvira - born 26 Jul 1835 at Clay, Onondago Co, NY; died 3 Feb 1886 at Pontiac, Livingston Co, IL. Married 6 Oct 1853 at New Bridge, NY to Albert William Rudd (this is my line) ...8-Mary - born 1836. Married Myron Ene On my paternal side: John Watts - born ca 1647; died ? (noted Baptist minister). Married Sarah Eaton. I only have information on one child: ...1- Elizabeth - born 15 Apr 1689 at Philadelphia Co (now Montgomery), PA; died 11 Oct 1756. She married Herman Yerkes - born 1689; died 2 May 1750. SAMMIE SDW@aol.com ********************************************* William Watts of Madison County, Kentucky I'll share what I read about William Watts in "Roberts-Orme" Vol. II, pp. 66-68. Most of the material associated with WW centers on his wife and her family. She was Frances C. Miller (1794-1838), the daughter of John Malcom Miller (1750-1806) and Jane Dulaney (1751-1844). William, who died in 1837, had 8 children with Frances: John M., Susan, Elizabeth Jane, Georgia Ann, Margaret, Robert M., William Green, and Mary. William and Frances lived in Madison Co., KY, and died there. I have seen reference to William and Frances in Madison Co. deed books. They owned property in Richmond, KY (Madison Co.) on Hart's Fork of Silver Creek. The earliest date for a real estate transaction there that I have is 1815. There was another William Watts in Madison Co. around this time -- son of Julius Watts and Mary Eve, and husband of (1) Nancy Morehead and (2) Frances W. Quinn. Written by Edward Watts *******************************************. HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE BAPTIST The first Baptist Church in the county was organized in January, 1773. This event took place in Lewis's Meeting House, which stood on old David Lewis's place, in the elevated ground south of the Staunton Road, about where the house of Mrs. Humbert now stands. The church commenced with a membership of forty-eight persons. George Twyman, who lived just south of Earlysville, was one of its original members, and at a meeting held two months later presided as Moderator. The influence of the Presbyterian polity, under which doubtless many of the members had grown up, was apparent in their earliest proceedings. The original organization was effected by two ministers and an elder, and at a subsequent meeting it was determined that "the feeling of the church concerning elders and deacons should be made known." It was several years without a pastor, but was occasionally supplied by such ministers as John Waller, and Elijah and Lewis Craig. This church was variously called by the names of Albemarle, Buck Mountain and Chesnut Grove. In 1801 they took possession of the old Buck Mountain Church of the Establishment, which had been disused by the Episcopalians. When that place of worship was claimed by its former owners, they removed to the union church in Earlysville in 1833, and in 1879 erected their present building a mile west of that place. Andrew Tribble was chosen their pastor in 1777, and was ordained by Lewis Craig and others. How long Mr. Tribble continued in that relation is not known. He purchased a farm of one hundred and seventy-five acres a short distance below the D. S. Tavern, which he sold in 1785, and it is likely he performed his pastoral duties until that time. William Woods, distinguished as Baptist Billy, was ordained at Lewis's Meeting House by Messrs. Tribble and Benjamin Burgher in 1780, and became the pastor when the work of Mr. Tribble ceased. In 1798 Mr. Woods became a candidate for the Legislature; and as the law of Virginia at that time prohibited a minister from holding a civil office, he relinquished his ministerial calling at Garrison's Meeting House in November of that year. When the church was first formed, it was in the bounds of Dover Association, which them embraced the whole State. In 1791 the Albemarle Association was constituted, including the territory south of the Rapidan, and west of a line running from Barnett's Ford on the Rappahannock to the mouth of Byrd Creek on the James. Up to this time eight other churches had been founded, for of which lay within the present limits of the county, Totier in 1775, Ballenger's Creek probably about the same time, Priddy's Creek in 1784, and Whitesides now Mount Ed, in 1788. Martin Dawson became a minister soon after 1774, and preached for many years at Totier, which was situated near Porter's Precinct, and was then commonly known as Dawson's Meeting House. His labors however extended largely over the whole county. Benjamin Burgher, who lived on the headwaters of Mechum's River, was for a long period the pastor of Mount Ed. In 1822 he, Benjamin Ficklin and John Goss had advertised to begin a protracted meeting on a certain day at Mountain Plains, but on the very day of the appointment Mr. Burgher rested from his earthly labors. John Goss came to the county from Madison in 1802. In 1820 Daniel Davis, Jr., a Baptist minister, preached occasionally in Charlottesville, sometimes in the courthouse, and sometime in a large room of John Burrus. An organization seems to have existed in town at that date, as Mr. Davis, advertised that he would baptize those who had made a declaration of their faith to the church. Yet it appears that the formal establishment of the Charlottesville Church did not take place until August, 1831. On that occasion four ministers were present, John Goss, Valentine Mason, Reuben L. Coleman and Charles Wingfield. Dr. Hardin Massie was appointed it Clerk. In October 1835, Dr. Massie conveyed to Nimrod Bramham, William Dunkum, Isaac White and Lewis Teel as trustees, a part of Lot. No. Five, on which, it was stated in the deed, the Baptist Church "stands". In 1853 the Circuit Court granted permission to sell the old church property, and appointed as trustees for the new church, William P. Farish, Lewis Sowell, James Lobban, John T. Randolph, John Simpson, James Alexander and B. C. Flannagan.
