Cooper, Jr. and have 2 sons James-26 years old and Phillip -17 years old. My E-mail is lcooper@USAmail.usouthal.edu. My father's name was Roy Lee Steppe (original spelling was Stepp - My father added the "e" on his name when they moved to Mobile years ago. ) He married Annie (Anna) Watts around August 1933. Mama was born Sept. 14, 1915. Her father was Gilbert Watts and her mother was Della Foashee Watts. Mama's brothers were William and Elmo (Doc). Her sister's name was Katheryn. Noel and Bettye Watts have a form I will fill out that will give more information about us. My mother married very young-17 or so and left Mississippi for Alabama with my daddy some years later. So, I don't know a lot about the Watts family. From: Jennifer Pederson - Zoey2300@aol.com The farthest back I was able to reach is to my G.G.Father Rufus Ponch born 1849. And his wife Audilea Moon Watts born 1851. Her maiden name was Audilea Moon Cantley. Her mothers maiden name was_____Duvall. She had five brothers, I only have the names for two. Will, who died in a gun fight in Silver City, New Mexico and John, who died of a bee sting. This family must of been of some wealth, Rufus Ponch Watts owned a plantation in Palistine Texas. I know it was very large because it supported over 1,000 slaves. RufusWatts’s family came from Tennessee . I don’t know much about this part if anything. I know there was other children other then Rufus. This is where my trail ends or starts with the Watts name. Rufus Ponch Watts fought in the Civil War, he was on the Confederate side. Terrees Texas Rangers. After the Civil War he had lost all his property. The family then moved to Hico Texas In Hico Texas Rufus was a Methodist preach and law man. He died in the streets of Hico in a gunfight after a bank was robbed. His wife Audilea and some of the family left for California, were some of the family was already. She later died in Porterville California. Their children were Pinkney Watts (M) Mattie_______ Gazum Jefferson Watts (M) Frances Jenkins Anna (Anner) Watts (M)Arthur Jones Audie Moon Watts (M) Samual Sharkey (Schenker) ( My Grandmother ) Essie Watts (M) Lessley Harrington Wesley Hardin Watts (M) Hazel Hillyerd Watts (M) Nellie_________ This is as it was told to me by my father James Harry Sharkey before he passed away. There is more, but it is more recent information. A few names of this people’s children and of corse my family. These names I have given have all passed away so I feel I do them no harm in stating their names and the stories I have been told. ******************************************** QUERIES (This query is not from a Watts researcher but maybe someone can help. ) From: ECK9210@aol.com Hello Lori, I don't have any info on your query question, but I was interested in the name Watts. My earliest known ancestor, Wm. Kindel/Kendall, died in 1777 in the Parish of St. Thomas in Orange co., Va and in his will he mentioned land that he had purchased from Edward Watts and also land he purchased from an Edward Pigg. I have been unable, plus many more before me, to find a way to go back earlier in the life of William Kindel/Kendall and now I am in the process of trying to find some connections of the names associated with my ancestor, hoping to stumble onto something. Is the Edward Watts I mentioned above be part of your ancestry? I feel fairly certain that the property is in the Southern part of Orange county and what is now Greene county. I would appreciate hearing from you on the above. Thanks, E. Cecil Kendall eck9210@aol.com ******************************************** LIST OF WATTS appearing in various 1607-1789 census (From FTW Census Index) Given Name State County Document Date Type of Page Census or Household numbers Andrew NC Craven Co. 1769 Andres NC Granville Co. 1755 Andrew SC Abbeville Dist. 1787 Bellingham ME Maine Terr. 247 1762 Bellingham ME Maine Terr. 252 1762 Berreman NC Bladen Co. 1763 Charles MD Frederick Co. 126 1756 Danial MD Anne Arundel Co. 23 1778 Fidelity Oath David KY Fayette Co. 1788 Tax List Edmond MD Anne Arundel Co. 23 1778 Fidelity Oath Edwar ME Lincoln Co. 308 1765 Edward ME Cumberland Co. 9 1769 Edward ME Cumberland Co. 344 1788 Edward VA Chesterfield Co. 1779 Edward VA Culpeper Co. 1764 Rent Roll Edward VA Richmond Co. 63 1783 Tax List Francis VA Prince William Co. 1753 Rent Roll Francis VA Prince William Co. 1754 Rent Roll Francis VA Prince William Co. 1751 Rent Roll Francis VA Stafford Co. 1723 Rent Roll Gideon KY Mercer Co. 45 1789 Tax List Henry KY Madison Co. 1789 Tax List Henry MA Massachusetts Colony 1658 Freeman List Henry ME Washington Co. 292 1770 Henry ME Washington Co. 163 1779 Jacob NC Granville Co. 1755 James MA Essex Co. 76 1673 James NC Northampton Co. 22 1786 State Census James SC Abbeville Dist. 1787 James VA Greenbrier Co. 1786 Tax List Joell VA Culpeper Co. 1764 Rent Roll John MD Baltimore Co. 59 1739 Residence List John MD Montgomery Co. 1778 Fidelity Oath John ME Washington Co. 163 1779 John NC Martin Co. 2 1787 State Census John NC Orange Co. 1755 John NH Rockingham Co. 1776 John SC Georgetown Dist. 1778 John SC Georgetown Dist. 1780 John SC Ninety-six Dist. 1779 John VA Culpeper Co. 1764 Rent Roll John VA Virginia Colony 1611 Jonathan VA Hampshire Co. 26 1782 04-00 Lewis NC Martin Co. 3 1787 State Census Mary VA Northumberland Co. 38 1782 02-00 Mary VA Richmond Co. 63 1783 Tax List Nathaniel NH Alstead,Cheshire Co. 1776 Peter KY Mercer Co. 46 1789 Tax List Peter MD St. Mary's Co. 540 1696 Petition List Peter, Jr NC Richmond Co 6 1786 State Census Ralph VA Middlesex Co. 56 1783 Tax List Rebecca MA Boston,Suffolk Co. 108 1714 Richard NC Granville Co. 1784 Richard VA Pittsylvania Co. 42 1782 10-00 Richard VA Stafford Co. 1723 Rent Roll Robert ME Cumberland Co. 461 1749 Robert ME Cumberland Co. 289 1743 Robert VA Berkeley Dist. 1772 Rent Roll Robert VA Berkeley Dist. 1776 Rent Roll Robert VA Berkeley Dist. 1777 Rent Roll Samuel MA Norfolk Co. 203 1677 Oath Of Allegiance Samuel ME York Co. 50 1771 Samuel VA Elizabeth City Co. 1779 Samuel VA Halifax Co. 24 1782 07-00 Sarah VA Culpeper Co. 1764 Rent Roll Sheverick VA Hanover Co. 28 1782 04-08 Stephe VA Amherst Co. 47 1783 Tax List Thoma NC Orange Co. 1755 Thomas NJ Salem Co. 320 1715 Muster Roll Thomas SC Abbeville Dist. 1787 Thomas VA Fauquier Co. 1779 Thomas VA Flourdien Hundred 1624 VIRGINIA PIONEER Thomas VA Hampshire Co. 25 1782 06-00 Thomas, Jr. VA Elizabeth City Co. 1779 Thos. [FOOTNOTE: Capt. John Gyles, who was for a time Commander of the garrison on St George's River was sone of Thomas Gyles, of Pemaquid, born about 1678. married 1st at Salisbury, Oct. 26, 1703, Ruth True, born at Salisbury , Oct. 5. 1663?, daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Whittier) True of that place, who were married April 20, 1675. Mrs Ruth Gyles died at Salisburyin 1720. Thomas Gyles married 2nd, at Roxbury, Nov 6, 1721 HANNAH HEATH born 1689, eldest daughter of Capt WM. and HANNAH (WELD) HEATH. A;; OF ROXBURY. CAPT GYLES was taken captive by the Indians, Aug 2, 1689, and on the 19th of June, 1698, arrived at Boston , after an absence of more than eight years. He excelled as an interperter. See his Narrative in "Indian Captives"; Gyles Family by Rev John A Vinton, p. 122, & c ] On Monday I had some discourse with ye Indians to shew them the necessity of sanctifying ye Sabbath, which was occassioned by their shooting a gun on ye Sabbath day. On Saturday Aug 31st, I discoursed with several Indians at Brunswick about Relegion, and they seemed to be very well pleased with my discourse. September ye 1st, I preached at Brunswick and several Indians came to hear me, Capt: Giles interpreted to them ye Heads of ye Sermons and they seemed well pleased therewithal. September ye 8th, I preached at Augusta. [FOOTNOTE; This town was once quite promising. It embraced the whole or a part of the territory of the present Phipsburg. Penhallow, p 82, says that Dr Noyes "built a stone Garrison at Augusta, at his own charge, which was judged to be the best in the Eastern Country." The sloop Pejepscot sailed from this place to Boston. This flourishing settlement was destroyed in the time of "Lovewell's war"} September ye 15th, I preached at George-Town. September ye 22nd, I preached at G:Town. September ye 24th, I discoursed with an Indian belonging to Neridgewock.\ September 25th, I discoursed with another Indian belonging to Nerridgewock at Mr WATTS"S Sept. 29th, I preached at George-Town Octb: 6th, I preached at Brunswick, and staid there ye ensuing week, and preached there on Octob: 13th, and while I was there we had news from Neridgewock by ye Indians yt (that) an Indian there was almost killed by his squaw which was a squaw yt (that) formerly tended upon ye Jesuit: but afterward we heard yt ye Indian was likely to recover. While I was there we likewise heard by ye Indians of Terrible fires beyond Canada whereby many of ye Indians were destroyed, and many being terrified fled from the place where they used to dwell. And we had an account of fourscore strange Indians yt were come to Penecook with their families who said yt they fled for fear of ye fire: but it was suspected yt they had come from Carolina. The Indians said yt the Jesuit told them yt the world is now to be gradually destroyed by fire and yt the fire would come to them by Christmas. While I was at Brunswick I was informed by Capt Giles yt the Amberoscoggin Indians had sent a petition to ye general court to have a Praying-housebuilt for them at Brunswick to meet with the English. Octob. 14th, I went from Brunswick to George-Town and soon after I came thither there came an Indian to inform MR WATTS ye (that) CAPT JO (who was speaker on behalf of ye Indians ye Two first Days of ye Governours treaty with them) had wounded himselfe by falling down on a knife yt hanged behind him in a Pouch, and the knife ran quite through his body and he was very like to die. Octob: 20th I preached at George-Town. Octob: 27th, I preached at George-Town in ye forenoon, and MrELMORE in ye afternoon. While I was at George-Town this time CAPT JO who was wounded came to Town, and I had an oppertunity to discourse with him. Here also I had an account from Capt Giles of his being informed by ye Indians yt the Jesuit still predicted yt ye world would soon come to an end , yt it would be in 49 days. ------------------------------------------------------- Octob: 31st, I went on board of MR WATTS'S sloop which was bound for Boston, and there went in ye sloop with me, MR WATTS, MR ELMER, MY WIFE, and divers others; we sailed out of MR WATTS'S Harbour about half an hour after sun- rising, and were favored with a fair wind.
