Question From: warrior32@juno.com

I have a Great Grandfather whose name was John Watts, he was born 1871 in Alabama. Do you know if Chief Little Tassel had any children or not and if so what were the names of his children. I think I might be kin to him and am trying to make that link. Could you help me. Where can I get a copy of Cherokee History By Emmet Starr and/or The Intruders by Sober.

Thank You
Mary

BIO# 1392 - BOONE CO - WINSTON, ALBERT G

Winston Watts Matson Noble Magee Hughes Calvert Seaton Gaines
=
Stocking-Hanover-VA OH England

Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed.,  1887, Boone Co.

ALBERT G. WINSTON was born in Boone County, Ky., November 25, 1832. Of the Winstons, in a published life of William Winston Seaton, we learn that 200 years ago five brothers, Winstons, of Winston Hall, Yorkshire, England, gentlemen of fortune and family, immigrated to the colony of Virginia, in the spirit of adventure. They settled in Stocking, Hanover Co., Va., and their offspring is scattered through many States, the most brilliant name of the descendants being that of Patrick Henry, whose mother was Sarah Winston. From this distinguished family Albert. G. Winston, the subject of this sketch, is a descendant. He is a son of WIlliam H., a son of John W., whose wife was a Miss Noble, of Virginia. John W. Winston was a farmer, as was also William, and the latter was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, who died in 1881. The mother of our subject was Lucetta Watts, daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Watts, a large and prominent family in Virginia and Boone County, Ky. Albert G. was the eldest of seven children born to William H. and Lucetta (Watts) Winston, viz: Noah N., Anne E., Mary L., Rebecca N., Virginia A. and Nancy. Our subject was reared on a farm, and educated in Covington, Ky. He began the study of law with Gov. John W. Stevenson, and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He was circuit clerk of Boone County from 1862 to 1868, and was also master commissioner at the same time. For ten years he was a law partner of Mr. Calvert, of Burlington, and now ranks as one of the leading attorneys of the county. He lives three and one-half miles from Burlington, on one of the most magnificent farm homesteads in Boone County. In 1855 he married Miss Georgetta Matson, of Oxford, Ohio, daughter of Phillip and Maggie (Magee) Matson. Six children have blessed this union: Mary L. (Hughes), Carrie (Gaines), Mattie G., Anna E., Charles A. (the latter graduating at the Woodward College, in Ohio, in 1886) and Katie L. (a student at the Oxford Ohio Musical and Female College). Mr. Winston is a gentleman and a scholar, and a stanch Republican in politics.

WATTS BOOKS BEING PUBLISHED AND FOR SALE
Listed below are three books which are for sale or in the works. Please take a few minutes and check them out. If it were not for the reserch shared through publication many of us would not have the genealogical information we have today. Lori

1. From: Cwilliams@ozip.com (Clarence & Katala Williams)

If you have space available, please mention my upcoming book publication (within the next year, I hope). It will be sold at cost, THE EMPHASIS OF THE BOOK: (2) To tie together several different WATTS descendant lines, seeking out the common ancestry. (2) To include all known descendants of these various lines so that future generations of the WATTS family will be
able to find their ancestry more quickly and easily.

I am still adding to the computerized family file, and will add any family list that connects to the present file. It is very likely that your WATTS line will tie into this file if you can trace your WATTS ancestry back four or five generations. Send ancestral charts, along with family pages with all pertinent information and notes, plus documentation. Don't forget to give exact dates and full names, plus places of birth, death, marriage and travels. Notes should be typewritten so that they can be scanned into the
record. If anyone wishes to submit a computerized file by disk, please use either FTW - FTM software of send a GEDCOM disk from other software programs; however GEDCOM files do not carry the personal notes along with them, so the notes will need to be sent separately. FTW files will include notes if one selects all items to include in DESCENDANT OUTLINES, then
"Copy/Export" the Descendant Outline onto a floppy disk. Do not hesitate to send hand-written information if this is all you have.

I am now taking reservations for the book, but those who want to reserve a book should send NO MONEY at this time. They should send me their name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and the number of copies they want to reserve. Reservations may be made without obligation. This is to get a preleminary count on how many books to publish. I cannot estimate an exact
price at this time, but I expect it to be between $40.00 and $50.00 (hard-bound). These would make good Christmas presents for 1998.

NOTE: The James Albert Watts descendant line is only one small branch of the vast number of WATTS descendants that will appear in the book. If space allows, I hope to include about 8,000-9,000 individuals of WATTS descendants and their spouses, plus all known parents of spouses. This represents about 45 years of research.

You asked me to list the descendant lines that will be included in my upcoming WATTS book, and this is difficult to explain, as there are several marriages between lines, and there are a few weak or unknown links that will be explained in the book.

Generally speaking, the WATTS lines to be included in the book were in Virginia in the 1700s, and they migrated southward and then westward. A few of these could have split off and gone north, but those who traveled northward and then west will not be included in the book. I will not attempt to detail in this letter all of the travels of these different lines that went south and then west, but they were living (through the late 1700's and througout the 1800's) in GA, AL, NC, SC, TN, KY, MS, AR, MO, TX and at the present time are living throughout the U.S. Their early travels were motivated primarily by the desire to find good land. Their travels to AL and MS were motivated by the chance of finding land formerly occupied by Indians. Some WATTS males married Cherokee women, and their half-breed children were faced with either seeking U.S. citizenship or traveling the Trail of Tears as Cherokees. Only a few of them chose the latter, and as a result, their names were taken from the Cherokee rolls. One family dropped out of the Trail of Tears in Izard County, AR, while others, from about 1835 to 1880 came westward by way of NC, AL, KY, TN, journeying by horseback and wagon train to Searcy County, AR, spreading then to other nearby counties, then to OK, MO, KS, and a few to TX.

Still another group (my ancestors) came by way of TN, then to MS where they owned land, then to Johnson County, AR. My great-grandfather, Vincent Watts 1805 (3/4 Cherokee), was shot and killed when he attempted to go to Indian Territory to claim citizenship there. Other members of the WATTS family were labeled "imposters" in Indian Territory, they were dispossessed and their buildings were burned. But, despite the ill treatment, a few WATTS families remained and continue to live in OK. These include the descendants of Malachi WATTS (3/4 Cherokee), son of Garrett WATTS, son of John WATTS, the Interpreter.

Other lines of the WATTS family migrated to Searcy County and surrounding counties in different groups. There are four different WATTS family reunions scheduled in Arkansas annually, but most of the participants do not know of their relationships to one another. There is also a WATTS reunion each year in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. These are also related to the Arkansas Groups. This book is an attempt to pull these groups together with common ancestry.

FOLLOWING IS A PARTIAL (TENTATIVE) LIST OF WATTS DESCENDANT LINES TO BE INCLUDED IN THE BOOK:

Chief (Little Carpenter) Attakullaculla Abt. 1700
His daughter, Wind Clan who married John Watts b.Abt.1724, Interpreter/Trader
His daughter, Wurteh, mother of Sequoyah (the ancestry of George (Sequoyah) Gist ties to the ancestry of George Washington)

Children of John Watts 1724, Interpreter/Trader & Wind Clan, Cherokee
Thomas (Rattling Gourd) WATTS about 1744
Garrett Z. WATTS
Vincent WATTS 1805-1879
Malachi WATTS 1793
Clinton WATTS 1808 & Letta Fields 1813
Others
Jacob WATTS 1767, son of John 1724
John (Young Tassel) WATTS Abt 1750, the Cherokee War Chief
Young Tassel's sons Thomas 1772, John 1791, Joseph Chestoolee) 1774, and Jacob 1793

ANOTHER WATTS LINE:

Descendants of John Watts 1745 and his son Edward about 1672
This is a very large family, linked with the RUST and BOGGESS families (Robert BOGGESS 1620, The Immigrant from England)
Members of this family married into the descendants of John Watts 1724, Interpreter. Many of these descendants now live in Mississippi and some in TX, CA, though they have spread to all parts of the U.S. There is also marriage between Charles WATTS 1779 and Rebecca BOONE 1790, their descendants having common ancestry with Daniel Boone.

OTHER WATTS LINES:

There are a few descendant lists who have not been tied to their early ancestry at this time, though there is circumstantial evidance that they are related to other identified families. Descendant Outlines will be given for these "splintered" groups, including some speculation as to their ancestry.

THIS BOOK, which draws from a data base of over 53,000 individuals who are inter-linked either by blood-line relationship or by marriage, will include many explanatory notes, a large bibliography and an alphabetized, page-referenced INDEX. This data base includes about 8,000-9,000 names of WATTS descendants, including their spouses. The family file includes seventy-nine (79) individuals with the name "John WATTS".

Other than the attempt to tie WATTS families together with common ancestry, this book will list all known descendants of these many large families. It is an effort to assist future generations in their attempt to find their ancestry. Full credits will be given to those who have contributed and will contribute to the family data and personal notes.

THIS IS A NON-PROFIT VENTURE. There is not a chance that I will recover my cost.

Subj: Watts book published
2. From: cm-chin@georgian.net (collingwood museum)

A brand new publication will be available December 4, 1997,
and will be a great idea for Watts researchers out there.

Mackinaw Productions of Canada has just published
W. WATTS & SONS BOAT BUILDERS - CANADIAN DESIGNS
FOR WORK AND PLEASURE 1842-1946. The softcover publication
is 224 pages, over 150 photographs, illustrations and boat plans,
with footnotes and indexed.

W. WATTS & SONS BOAT BUILDERS is co-authored by Peter Watts (great grandson of the founder) and Tracy Marsh (curator of The Collingwood Museum). The publication explores the many designs of Watts, well beyond the well known Collingwood skiff or mackinaw, and includes huron boats, life boats, lighthouse tenders, row boats, life rafts and more. The story is not just one of Georgian Bay, or even the
Great Lakes, it includes stories of boats built for Geological Survey work on Hudson Bay and James Bay. Read about the wreck of the KEEWATIN, the Mounties first boat to begin their marine unit, and the serious misadventure on Lake Winnipeg. Follow Captain William Watts Jr. to the Pacific Coast where he used the tried and true Collingwood design and had a major impact on the salmon fishery in B.C.

Anyone interested in the book may request an order form to be
FAXED to you by Mackinaw Productions. Mackinaw Productions can be reached
electronically at mackinaw@georgian.net. The price is $34.95 plus g.s.t.

3. Rick Watts has published a new 60 page book titled:

Descendants of William Watts: Early Settler of Livingston Parish

This William Watts was ca 1776 in that Watts prolific area of NC.
Several of William's children were born in in Anson Co, NC. While the book is oriented toward this one
family and descendants, Rick has done a through job of documenting most Watts families in LA as well
as early families in MS. He cites reference books like: Early Settlers of Mississippi by Walter
Lowrie, Washington DC, 1834 and Records of Natchez District (MS) 1810. The latter identifies that
in 1810:
Josiah Watts resided in Wayne County
James Watts resided in Wayne County
Rubin Watts resided in Green County
Thomas Watts resided in Marion County.

Cornelius Watts of Virginia

I spent 4 days on the British Floor of the LDS Library in Salt Lake City and
have found some interesting things but not what I'd hoped to find:

1. The only hope of knowing what the Cornelius Watts will said beyond what
Charles Brunk Heinemann has in his book (like where he lived) will be to
find any existing copies of the will in America; a bomb fell on the records
center in Exeter in 1942 and all records there (including the Will I wanted
to find) were destroyed, DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE A COPY CAN BE FOUND??
Charles Heinemann must have had a copy??

2. Ann Watts, Widow is listed in the Subsidy of 1641 (tax) rolls for Wells City in the Hundred of Wells Forum. She was taxed 1 Pound for land. This tax was payable in 2 payments due 27 Feb. and 15 April. This tax was for the relief of his majesty's (King Charles I) army and the northern parts of the Kingdom. It was subsequently expanded to include 2 more payments due 20
Nov. The other category of taxation was for goods, so it would seem it was for her house and not for goods in a store. This would also seem to "prove" the house mentioned in Heinemann's book in Cornelius'will was in the town of Wells and not an adjoining farm. (Information from "Somerset Protestation Returns and Lay Subsidy Rolls 1641-2"; and The British Museum's Film # Add MS 28/275, 276, and 277.)

(I seem to have not written down the Author for this book; will check the LDS Library listings and supply this to you soon.)

3. In the book "The History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset, Collected from Authentick Records, and an Actual Survey Made by the Late Mr. Edmond Rack" by The Reverend John Collison, FAS; 1791, pages 409-410, mention is made of "Benefactors to this city and parish" (St. Cuthberts Parish, Wells) and lists "Plate given to this church for ever" "1644. Mr. Cornelius Watts a small silver stand guilted---3 pounds, 3 shillings." This value is half that given to a "large silver bowle and cover guilted with gold" so must have been an expensive piece. Since the date (if correct) is after the death of Cornelius, I would think it a piece given in his memory.
(Unfortunately, I did not know of this piece when I visited the Church, so I did not inquire if it is still in the Church.) This was the only mention I could find of Cornelius in any of the County History books in Salt Lake City FHC Library.

4. There were many Watts Families living in Somerset and near Wells. There are many early wills for some of these Watts, but from what I could find in Indexes, there is no mention of Cornelius. From a book "The Visitations of the County of Somerset in the Years 1551 and 1575" by F.W. Weaver, 1885, there was one "Wattes" family with arms, William Kaynel of Biddleston, near Chippenham, Wiltshire married to Isabell who had a daughter Alice married to Richard Wattes (second marriage for Richard) and they has two sons, John, and Robert (1573), also there were two sons by an un-named first wife, Barnard and John (who died young). In the book "The Visitation of the County of Somerset in the Year 1623" by F.T. Colby (written before 1899 and re-printed 1957) there is one Watts Family, William Watts of Cotlingham, married to the daughter of Awdlam who had a son, Hugh Watts of Cotlingham married to Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas of Marnhull, and they had Nicholas Watts of Cotlingham first married to Ann, daughter of William Chapell, and then married to Mary, daughter of Simon Sloper and they had
Hugh and Mary (children at the time of the visitation of the Hearld). I could find no link for Cornelius to either Family.

My good intentions to find the author I failed to write on the notes I took in Salt Lake City have not come to pass. As far as I can tell from the LDS Library catalog here in the Silverdale FHC, the material (1641-2 Subsidy Rolls for Somerset) was first in the work of Edward Dwelly, late 1800's; but what I copied was a newer book and the book is not listed in the Catalog here. I did find a book in Salt Lake, and I made copies; but now I can't find it listed!

Don and Claudia took a trip to England recently and she was able to visit and photograph St. Cuthbert's Church, Wells. She is offering to copy some of these photographs for a small price to those who might be interested. To those who are of this line, this is a wonderful offer so please remember to compensate her with coping costs and mailing costs involved. Please remember this is the Christmas season so be patient with your request. Cornelius Watts is the "father" of many of the Watts Virginia lines in Culpeper, Orange, Albemarle, Greene, and Hanover counties. A copy of his will is found in Watts' On-Line issue #17. Please e-mail Claudia is you are interested in photographs of the church. Lori

WATTS and Cherokee Heritage
I have read with interest the posts regarding John WATTS aka OLD CHIEF TASSEL and CHIEF LITTLE TASSEL. The "Old John Watts" described below is believed to be the brother of Garrett WATTS. These documents detail the Cherokee lineage of at least one WATTS line.

The following affidavits were signed in support of the petition of James Brit. WATTS before the Indian Council proving his Cherokee lineage:

"I Nancy J. Rust was bornd in Cherrokee County Alabama in the year 1832 and I know the Watts family. Old John Watts was my great grand father he had two brothers James and garrett and I Nancy J. Rust a daughter of Jesse Watts who was the son of Levi Watts who was the son of Old John Watts that moved from Carolina Territory to Cherrokee County Alabama.  The Watts family moved from Carolina to Georgia Tennessee and Alabama Territory. The following affidavit was also signed in support of the same petition:

There is some reason to suspect that Nancy J. Watts was aka Nancy J. Watson and the sister of B.L. Watson, J.P. - it seems likely that the Levi above took the name Watson.

Descendants of James Albert Watts
(The following is an e-mail Clarence sent to Joan and forwarded a copy to me. First I want to thank Clarence for doing this because it gives us all a chance to see information we also might be interested in.
Second, I want to encourage the rest of you to forward responses on Watts research that might be of interest to the rest of us. Lori)

I have just received the WATTS newsletter (WATTS ON-LINE) containing your descendant lineage from John Watts 1799, and was pleased when I found that you had some exact dates that I did not have.

I am a descendant of John Watts, the Interpreter/trader who married a daughter of Chief Attakullaculla (Little Carpenter). This John was father of Chief Young Tassel, and I am descended from Young Tassel's brother, Garrett Watts.

My wife and I have researching the WATTS family for the past 45 years, and have collected a great number of watts families from several different line, all of which we believe are related. We have set about trying to find the common ancestry for all of them, and whether or not we are succussful in this, we plan to publish a book on what we have found, sometime within the next year.

You mentioned a WATTS family reunion at Marshall, AR. You are probably aware of the fact that there are also four other WATTS reunions each year in Arkansas, plus one in Oklahoma. My wife and I have not attended the one in Marshall, but we DO attend all of the others and collect family information for the book. I would certainly like to be put on the mailing list for notification of the next reunion at Marshall.

There is very strong evidence that all of these WATTS groups who are having separate reunions are cousins. This is one of the most interesting projects we have undertaken, trying to tie them all together. We would certainly like to enlist your help in doing this. None of this is for glory or profit. We think that all members of the WATTS family, now and later, would benefit by all of our combined efforts. I get many interesting theories on the ancestry of your John Watts 1799, and I would like to hear yours.

First of all, I would like more details on your immediate family and descendantsk, such as full names and exact places and dates of birth, marriage and death, plus any personal notes that you care to send. All will be entered into this massive WATTS record, giving your credit for all that you contribute.

I have many descendants of John Watts 1799 in my file, but my information is lacking on your branch from James Albert Watts 1875, downward. I love cousins and long lists of descendants.

Following is what I have on the James Albert Watts line:

Cornelius Watts of Virginia

I spent 4 days on the British Floor of the LDS Library in Salt Lake City and have found some interesting things but not what I'd hoped to find:

1. The only hope of knowing what the Cornelius Watts will said beyond what Charles Brunk Heinemann has in his book (like where he lived) will be to find any existing copies of the will in America; a bomb fell on the records center in Exeter in 1942 and all records there (including the Will I wanted to find) were destroyed, DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE A COPY CAN BE FOUND??

(Information from "Somerset Protestation Returns and Lay Subsidy Rolls 1641-2"; and The British Museum's Film # Add
MS 28/275, 276, and 277.)

(Unfortunately, I did not know of this piece when I visited the Church, so I did not inquire if it is still in the Church.) This was the only mention I could find of Cornelius in any of the County History books in Salt Lake City
FHC Library.

Lori

The Twelve Days of a Genealogy Christmas

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Twelve census searches,
Eleven printer ribbons,
Ten e-mail contacts,
Nine headstone rubbings,
Eight birth and death dates,
Seven town clerks sighing,
Six second cousins,
Five coats of arms,
Four GEDCOM files,
Three old wills,
Two CD-ROMs,
And a branch in my family tree.

Merry Christmas to everyone!!
