The Watts On-line
Issue No. 29
September 19, 1997

The filing cabinet is getting a bit low.  Now is a good time for some of you who have not shared with us to send us some of your research.  The Watts newsletter has been very successful and as of next month we will have been sharing for a full year!  I know I have advanced my research tremendously and from the many messages I get, I know some of you have to.   Our mailing list has grown to over 150 members that receive the Watts' OnLine newsletter.  Many of you have not had the opportunity to read past newsletters and these may just contain the information you need.  So....I will again mail out the back issues.  This is the way it will work.  Please conform to these direction so I can get them out efficiently without a great
amount of effort on my part.
If you want back issues of the newsletter you need to e-mail me and be sure to but in the subject line "Watts back issues" .  You do not need to tell me which issues you want as I will delete the message as soon as you are on the mailing list.  When you have received all the issues you need, you will need to e-mail me again and tell me to take you off the back issue mailing list.   Please DO NOT put any other issues in the message as I will delete them.  If you want to ask me a question or  submit something do it separately.
I will send out 5  back issues every other week (opposite weeks of the newsletter) starting on September 26th with issues #1-5.

1.  From:  nwatts@swbell.net (Neal Watts)  (I have edited and combined two messages from Neal)

I am Neal Parke Watts Jr..
I'm looking for information on my GGGrandfather John Watts, born in Chesterfield District SC on May 23, 1805.  He moved with his father to Wayne County (later Covington), MS ca 1815.  I have lots of info on his offspring.

Going the other way, I suspect he is possibly the son of John (yes another) Watts. who moved to  Wayne County with his brothers Rubin and Thomas.  Their father was John A. Watts, born 1849.  His father was William Watts.  Thomas was born in GA.  John A. was born in NC and several of his children were born in SC.  Thomas later moved to Jasper County TX.

If you are interested in Watts' in general, Rick Watts in Allen, TX, just up the road from me,  is about to publish a book on a John Watts who arrived, possible even before Jamestown, and has numerous and famous descendants among the Cherokee. The forthcomming book on Cherokee John Watts  is by Rick Watts.   I'm trying to convince him to get on-line.  Currently, you must write.

It wouldn't surprise me if nearly all of the early Watts families (1600-1700) entered through Virginia.  From the contacts I've had, most families later found in NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TX. came from VA through each of the states in order.  The John A. Watts (1749) was born in NC.  Some of his children were born in SC, others in GA.  Three sons moved to MS.

Kindred Konnections is a web site hosting a large database of genealogy.  I found my GGfather there and also the Thomas Watts I wrote about.  Their URL is:

There is a listing in there free search::

In your next issue you might ask if one of your subscribers is the author of the World Family Tree (Vol 4) entry for John A. Watts.   (If any of you out there submitted the information in Vol. 4, please message me and let us all know!)

Also, in Family Tree Maker World Family Tree Volume 4 I found the following on John A. which might also suggest my GGGfather John Watts' father could be John A.'s son John Watts.:

Thomas Watts was born 1771 in Fairfield Co. Camden District of South Carolina.  Thomas Watts moved to Montgomery Co. Georgia, sometime after 1790, along with his father John A. Watts. Thomas Watts then moved to Covington Co. Mississippi around 1815, with his brothers Reubin Watts and John Watts.  He and his family lived in Mississippi until around 1835 when Thomas along with his two youngest sons, Absalom Watts and  Bartlett Watts, and Daughter Elizabeth Watts Lott, made their move to Texas.  First to Jasper Co. Texas, (1840) then on to Smith Co. Texas, where he died in 1854. Absalom moved on to Burnet Co. and Bartlett to Wood Co. Daughter Elizabeth Watts Lott remained in Smith County, her husband Arthur Lott Jr.  died in  1854 and she remarried, to  man by the name of Henry Smith in 1855.  Thomas Watts' Will is on file in Smith Co. Texas. Bartlett was the administrator of the Will but Thomas's daughter Elizabeth  contested Bartlett as administrator as she felt he was not  being fair in his duties.  It is my belief that Thomas Watts was married once before he married Elizabeth Lott. Since Elizabeth was born in Georgia in 1775 this makes sense.   In the 1790 census of South Carolina showes Thomas married with no children, and the birth date of his oldest child is not until nine years later.
In the 1890 Census of South Carolina, Camden District, Fairlield County,  Thomas is married,   he would be 19 year old, wife and  no children.  His father is also there with 1 male under 16 and 1   male over 16 also 6 daughters. 1820 census of Covington Co. Mississippi shows Thomas and wife both over 45, 3 males under 10, 1 between 10-16,2 between 16-26, 2 females between 10-16, and 1 female between 16-26. This would be all of his living children, at that time. 1830 census Thomas only has one child at home that would be Bartlett. His wife Elizabeth is still alive at that time. She must have died some time after 1830.  1840 Citizens of Texas Jaspe Co., land Grants shows that Thomas arrived in Texas in April 1839, has 320 acres of land in Jasper Co., (since Thomas was only allotted 320 acres of land would indicate that he was widowed at this time).  Absalom in June 1836, with 640 acres in Jasper Co.  In 1850 Thomas is widowed, age 79, and living in the
house hold of Bartlett his youngest son. Thomas was buried some where in Smith Co. Texas, but I have not been able to find just where.
In the Chronicles of Smith County Texas, Volumes 11-20. It shows that all of the Watts' family belonged to the Harris Creek Baptist Church, which was organized in 1849 near the present town of Winona. There was also a cemetery next to the church and it is possible that Thomas was burried there.
Thomas Watts signed his Will with an X which would indicate that he could neither read or write, which was not uncommon during that period of our history. From all the information that I have found Thomas Watts must have been a very intelligent man, eventho he could not read or write. He always had large land holdings and a large number of slaves.
The tax records of Covington Co. Mississippi, 1819 thru 1838 , he paid taxes on at least 300 to 400 acres of land and had at least 9 to 10 slaves.

                          THE WILL OF THOMAS WATTS
In the name of God, Amen. I, Thomas Watts of the county of Smith and State of Texas, being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory. Blesed be God, do make this my last will and Testament. Item #l I give and bequeath to my beloved son, Bartlett S. Watts my negro man Simon, it is my will and request that the residue of my property be equally divided between my heirs.  I nominate and appoint my beloved son Bartlet S. Watts executor to this my last will and testament. In writing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 29th day of January 1854.

I am enjoying the Watts Newsletter-still not made my connection from Elijah Walker Watts b.17 Feb 1861, Hickman Co.TN, m. Nancy Ellen Spencer, (1) Naomi Louise Spencer (2) Nancy Ellen died 30 Jul 1896, buried Humphreys Co.TN.Neoma Louise b.15 Dec 1876,TN. (sisters) married Elijah Walker Watts29 Jan 1899.

I find one Elijah Watts in Hickman Co.TN census 1850 in same household w/Nancy-He is 23 yrs./she 50 .  He is the correct age to be my grandfather's father/Nancy is the correct age to be Elija's mother.  Not yet found who she is or who old Elijah married.  In the newsletter John Watts' will lists Elijah, (as a son and as a brother) and in numerous censuses, an Elijah appears in different states.  If anyone can help-will appreciate .  Thanks again for your time & efforts in newsletter.  Reba in AL

Hi!  I was given your email address by ArnoldMB (Mary Arnold?), who saw my query on the Va. Web page.  She said that you might have information on the Watts family in Virginia.  I am doing some genealogical research, and amtrying to find out about my husband's great-grandmother, Annie Watts Edwards.   I would like to find out her marriage date and any information about her parents and forebears.

She was born 27 Nov 1849 (don't know where) and died 5 Feb 1934, probably in Richmond, VA.  She was married to the Rev. William Emory Edwards, a Methodist minister.  They are both buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, but with
his family, not hers.  Her given name may have been Harriet Anne Watts, although her gravestone says "Annie Watts Edwards."  Their daughter was Pauline Van Culan Edwards (1885-1976).

If you might have any information, or know of anyone who would, I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks!

Members of Sand Run Baptist Church, Boone Co., Kentucky, 1819-1867

The following two membership lists are from the earliest Church minute books and have been transcribed and electronically published with the kindpermission of the Pastor and Trustees of the current Sand Run Baptist Church.  The Minute Books remain in the possession of the Church at 1327 North Bend Rd., Hebron, KY 41048  (as of August 1997). The Sand Run Church was formed on March 20, 1819, by 77 members of nearby Bullitsburg Baptist Church.  Bullitsburg Church was the oldest in the North Bend Baptist Association of Kentucky, having been constituted in June 1794. (No such membership lists are known to survive at Bullitsburg Church.)     The Sand Run lists are invaluable since, inter alia, they indicate likely family groups including all names and show what happened to the parishoners--e.g., they  provide death dates long before any civil authority kept them--or show by obtaining letters of recommendation to a new church that members likely moved. The "aliases" in the footnotes are the later married names of female members, most of which correspond with civil marriage records in the county archives. Note some overlap between the two lists, especially at the beginning of the second list. In the hard copy version, an index follows the lists; in the electronic version, use your browser's "find" feature to search for specific names. (Remember that the spelling of names varied considerably in those days.) There are two additional lists in the minute books of Black members of the Church. The asterisks designate those members that were baptized into the church.  The minutes themselves include some additional information about individuals, such as place of origin, reasons for dismissals, etc., as well as information about church administrative business. Interestingly, the minutes show that church regulations were to be adopted by majority, except for the admission and dismissal of members, which was decided by nanimity.
The lists were transcribed by Stephen W. Worrel and Anne W. Fitzgerald in 1996-97. Further nformation on Boone Co. and northern Kentucky genealogical records may be found at http://home.att.net/~sworrel/.
