QUERIES

Question:   From:  EASYSKIER@aol.com

Thanks for the Laurens, SC posting information.  Could you please help me.......where do I go from here.  I still can't find my gfather.  I think possibly I found a 12yr. old George Watts living with a Robert Putnam in 1870 census in Laurens County, SC.  How do I verify if that is my grandfather?  I also can't find his brothers anywhere either.  I'm stuck.   Please help if you can?  Also how do I get people to respond to inquiries?  I am sending the SASE but still haven't had much luck.

Thanks for everything ...................Easy Skier

Answer:  You might dig through the estate records of Robert Putnam of Laurens Co., SC.  Sometimes they list "Property"  and it might give a relationship such as a mother etc.  At this point you are not even sure your George was a slave at this time but it is a definite lead.  Does anyone else have other suggestions?

The David Watts' of Albemarle Co., VA

From: jsattle9@idt.net (James Sattle)

I am looking for any leads on this Watts Family.  I copied the information from the book "History of Albemarle County in Virginia" by Rev. Edgar Woods.  The book states that the first David Watts is probably a brother of Jacob Watts. Does anyone know this David Watts Family.
Please email me at Edie Suttle, jsattle9@idt.net

    m. William Watson

Answer:  The David's of Albemarle Co., Virginia have been somewhat confusing and depending on who you speak to or which book you refere to you might get a different answer.  These David's are 1.  David Watts who married Mary J. Brown  (Also presented last week)
2.  David Watts who married  Susannah
3.  David Watts who married Sarah Bush
4.  David Watts who married Ruth Twyman
5.  David Watts who married Elizabeth Crenshaw

What I would like to do is give you a basic of each of the Davids and what  I believe the relationships might be.  I have spoken with several others researching this large family of with all these Davids are a part of.  There is no doubt in my mind that the David Watts who married Mary J. Brown is the son of  John Watts and Lucy Dalton and Grandson of Jacob Watts and
Elizabeth Durrett.  See note below which seem to be a definite tie.

1.  DAVID7 WATTS  (JOHN6, JACOB5, THOMAS4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, CORNELIUS1) was born Abt. 1791 in VA, and died Bef. 1840 in Albemarle , VA.  He married MARY J. BROWN 08 Feb 1819 in Albermarle Co. VA. Notes for DAVID WATTS:
Records on this family come from W.P. Meeds Jr. who is a descendant.  He gave the records to Charles Hineman and are in his book on pa 156.  #1516

1791 - Birth probably in Abermarle Co. VA

1813-1830 - Listed in Albermarle Co. Tax records

1816 Apr 1 - David sold to his brother Garrett Watts, 10 or 12 acres adjoining John Watts , Samuel Austin and Mr. Crenshaw. (Albemarle Co., VA DB 24, pa 93.)

1823 Nov 1 - John Brown and his wife, Mary Brown made a deed of gift to their daughter, Mary J. Watts.  This property was on wthe land David and Mary lived and it was stipulated that David was to have no interest in the property.   (Albemarle Co., VA DB 24, pa. 289-290)

1823 Nov 17 - He gave a deed of trust covering all his interest in his share of the estate of his father, John Watts.  (Albemarle Co., VA DB 23, pa. 117)

1823 Dec 23 - David was in custody in Albemarle and gave to Achitles Douglas all his property and interest in his father's estate.  (Albemarle Co., DB 23, pa 135)

1824 Aug 2 - David pledges his crops for 5 subsequent years as security to Wilson Roberts.  (Albemarle Co., DB 24, pa. 350)

W. P. Meads Jr. states David had 12 children.  Only 8 are known at present

1830 - 1840 - died and was burried on the property once owned by Jacob and now owned by his father John Watts.  John died and is burried next to him.  This is believed to be either in Albermarle Co. or Greene Co. as the property was on the border and according to records it was Albermarle.

1840 - His widow, Mary, is listed in Albermarle Co. Tax records.

The Will of Elijah D. Watts, brother of David refers to several of Davids
Children.

Eliza Ann Watts, descendant of Robert H. Watts, brother of David Watts Charles Brunk Heinemann, Watts Families, pa. 155-156 Notes of W. P. Meads Jr.

This next David is clearly the Elder of the Davids of Albemarle Co., VA.  This David did have a son named David and clearly left land to that son.

2.  DAVID4 WATTS  (EDWARD3, EDWARD2, CORNELIUS1) was born Abt. 1702, and died Abt. 1767 in Albemarle , VA.  He married SUSANNAH.

Notes for DAVID WATTS:

Heineman states his birth about 1702 while Wood's History of Albermarle Co. places his birth in 1729.  This could be confused with The brother of Jacob Watts.

Heineman also states:  "Except for numerous points of similarity in Christian names, inter-marriage, joint signatures, etc., we have nothing to defintely identify David Watts as a son of Edward.   There are numerous records in Louisa Co. and Albermarle Co. on pa. 68-69.  Some are as follows:

1745 July 11 - D.B. A - pa 86  He deeded 300 acres to Robert Row.  The land had been patented by him 6/5/1756, then in Hanover County.  It was on the main branch of Prittles Creek adjoining Joshua Smith.  Land book 17 pa. 104 1748 Apr 26 - David deeds with his wife Susannah, 400 acres to John Miner of Spotsylvania Co., receiving for it 600 acres in St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., Va.  The land had been granted to John Mallory, 9 Aug 1735, and was sold to David in a deed recorded in Hanover Co., VA.  (Louisa Co. DB A. pa. 305)

1751 Apr 2 - David acquired 300 acres from Benjamin Douglas.  This land adjoined Carr's corner.  (Louisa Co., DB A)

1751 Aug 27 - David acquired 300 acres from Richard Hammock.  David Watts is described of Safford County.  (Louisa Co., VA DB A, pa. 434)

1755 - Woods Orange Co. history describes him as a soldier of the French and Indian War from Orange Co. VA and he received land for his service.

1755 Aug 25 - David acquired 1200 acres in Louisa Co. and Albemarle Co., VA from John Carr, John Walter, and Agnes and Sarah Minor, widow of John Minor.  Land had been patented to John Carr.  (Louisa Co., DB B, pa. 82)

1758 Feb 20 - David deeded 100 acres to John MacKauley.  This land adjoined Hollands.  (Louisa Co., DB B, pa. 337)

Children of DAVID WATTS and SUSANNAH are:
2. i. JOHN5 WATTS.
ii. NATHAN WATTS.
iii. SUSAN WATTS.
iv. CHARLES WATTS.
v. NANCY WATTS, m. WILLIAM SIMS JR., 22 Dec 1787, Orange Co. VA.
3. vi. DAVID W WATTS, b. Albermarle, VA; d. 1867, Albermarle Co. VA.

So which David Watts is the son of  this senior David?  Heinemann suggests it was  the David who married Ruth Twyman.  In e-mail conversations with Edward Watts of  Northern Virginia, Edward has presented a stong case that the David who is the son of this senior David was the David who married Sarah Bush.   For one, this David was probably born about the time of his wife, Sarah, who may have been born in 1735.  I am not able to confirm the source of this date.  Can anyone confirm the date?  The Children of Jacob Watts of Albemarle Co., VA had children who were born in the 1770's.  The birth date of this David is to early.  This birth date would fit in with the David Senior.   Notice the similar names in land deeds.  It is not unusual that people married those that lived near them.  Remember they did not have cars etc. to go out and meet people as we do today.

3.  DAVID W5 WATTS  (DAVID4, EDWARD3, EDWARD2, CORNELIUS1) was born in Albermarle, VA, and died Bef. 05 Jan 1818 in Albermarle Co. VA.  He married SARAH BUSH, daughter of PHILLIP BUSH.

Notes for DAVID W WATTS:
All records of David were found in Albemarle Co., VA.

1813 May 4 - David deeded the 222 acres on Licking Hole Creek to his son Phillip Watts.  (DB 19, pa. 99)

1816 May 3 - Will made in Albemarle Co., VA
