***IMPORTANT*** This will be the last
newsletter until July 18th. We are taking a month long cross country
trip and I will not have access computer on-line service. We
have been planning this trip for a couple years now and it is filled with
lots of sight-seeing, and many cemeteries across the U.S. My kids
want to know why most families get to go to Six Flags while we always go
to cemeteries. Their mother is a die hard genealogist! I can't
image a roller coaster being more fun that finding a gravestone that
belonged to a ancestor. During this time please take a look at your
research and find something that may be of interest to others. You
might even get a part of your line together with dates and places (in
outline form) and forward that. DO NOT send it until after July
4th. But DO get involved sending research as this is the lifeline of
the newsletter and we all benefit. Our subscription list has grown
to over 125 Watts researchers which is wonderful. I will look
forward to hearing from you when I get back.
Because I will be gone so long , I didn't want you to not have enough
Watts information so this is a special, longer, two part newsletter.
Enjoy!!

MEMBERS LINES
1. Bo Watts - bowatts@brinet.com
I am also descended from Thomas Watts, but a very different one. My
ancestor was born Abt 1720 and moved to Kershaw County, SC. We
believe that his wife was named Tabitha but that is all we have been able
to verify. I have info that he was the son of Francis Watts who was
born in 1695 in Prince William County, Virginia and died in 1754 and his
wife was named Ann. This we have not been able to verify.
My Thomas Watts had four sons, Isaiah, John, Benjamin, and Julius
Alexander. I am descended from Julius Alexander. He had
several children one of whom was Benson Watts, and Benson's sons was
Julius B. Watts who was my great grandfather. I have a good record
of this line and would be glad to send you a copy of My FTM list if you
would send me your mailing address. The E-Mail address of pwatts@imap2.asu.edu
is a direct descendant of this line.
Since our records do not indicate what happened to John and Benjamin Watts
we might be connected through them. My curiosity is aroused.
Bo.
2. Clarence Russell Williams - CWilli2659@aol.com
I am a descendant of Chief Attakullaculla (Little Carpenter), and
have been researching that line of WATTS for the past 43 years. I
also have much information on the descendants of other WATTS lines who
settled first in Virginia, moving westward through NC, GA, AL, MS, TN, KY,
AR, MO, KS, TX, OK.
My wife and I are co-authoring a WATTS FAMILY HISTORY, and plan to
publish this within the next year.
Thanks,
Clarence Russell Williams

Hi Lori, got issue no 23 today and printed it out.
Never sent you my WATTS connection so this is the name I have. FANNIE
WATTS WILLIAMS--these people were in the Newberry/Saluda/Edgefield area of
SC. Fannie married about 1800 to JOHN FULMER(s/o Capt Jacob Fulmer.)
Fannie had a dau, Isabelle Williams b ca 1796 m 1823 to CHARLES PLUNKETT
(Aiken Co area of SC). Fannie and John Fulmer had a dau, Jane Fulmer who
married my Obediah Boddie (s/o John) I have found nothing at all about who
her 1st marriage was to or anything about her parents. And this is all I
have on Fannie. If you or anyone can help, would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks and keep the newsletter coming. betty
8. Lynne Grant - MzBoh@aol.com
Hello,
My interests also include genealogy and I found your
name and address on the Internet on the Illinois page while searching for
some databases. I hope this is not a bother to you.
I have a mystery here, I am looking for my
Grandfather's past...His name is Harold Perry Grant and he was born in
1878-died in 1925. Her married my Grandmother, Goldie Matson in
1914/1915/1916 her date of birth is 1897 and
her death year was 1963.
Harold also had a previous wife named Valerie and
her stone says
1886-1910.
I am not sure where this marriage took
place, Henry Co. is what I believe but because they moved to Stark Co and
Knox Co it may be varied.
I have the SSDI and live in Kansas City MO.
so if I can ever be of any help to you please let me know...
Thank you
Lynne Grant

From "Early Washington County Settlers Colonel John Watts"
by Elizabeth P Newsom Published in the Sandersville Progress ,
Sandersvillle Georgia June 26, 1975
Col John Watts, Revolutionary Soldier, early settler,
surveyor and public servant of Washington County was another contemporary
of Governor Jared Irwin, and probably settled in Washington County before
either Governor Irwin or Col John Ruterford.
The Gazette of the State of Georgia published 4-7-1785
(now the Augusta Chronical, and seen on microfilm at the Department of
Archives and History in Atlanta) printed the report of the Grand Jury of
Burke County which met 15 March 1785 and recommended John Wats(sic) to be
one of the three receivers of the Returns of the taxable property in
Washington County. The Court appointed them. John Watts
had the part of Washington County from the Euchee Path to the Lower
Trading Road for his district. Jesse Jackson had the Lower District
and John Man had the Upper District. (I well remember how deligted I was
to find that bit of our county history. Had not a fellow researcher
directed me to it I would never have seen it for who would have thought of
looking for Washington County data in the reports of the Grand Jury of
Burke County.) MEMOIRS OF GEORGIA in a sketch of
Judge Richard F Watts of Stewart County mentioned his ancestor , John
Watts, and called him a" Virginian, son of a Scotman ..." and
adds that " He was an ardent patriot and in 1792 was a member of the
General Assembly of Georgia. Among the oldest settlers of the state,
he was a man of strong character and influence"
There are 13 grants of land to him from 1786 to 1796, on
record at the Archives. The date of the earliest grant I found was
for 100 acres dated 1-26-1786. It was described as bounded on the NE
by land of Irwin, SW by land of Watts ( an indication that he probably had
an earlier grant that I did not find ) and other sides bounded by vacant
land. The total amount of land found granted to him was about 300
acres . (My note BGW I think he had much more land
) He was an active surveyor and also served as a Justice
of the Land Court of Washington County so his name appears severalhundred
times in some old books in the Ordinaries Office called Surveyor's
Records Books A-C and D_E. THE MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE
CONCIL OF GEORGIA show that on 1-12-1787 the Governor signed commissions
for the feild officers of the Washington County Militia as follows.
Jared Irwin, Esqur., Colonel: John Watts, Esqr., Lt Colonel:
and John Evans, Esqr., Major.
In 1787 and 1788 he was a member of Assembly, one of 10 from
our county.
In 1788 with Jared Irwin and John Rutherford he was named to
be a part of a State Convention which ratified the U S Constitution and
made changes to the State Constitution to comform to the U S
Constitution. The Augusta paper of 5-2-1789 show that
John Irwin, John Watts and Joshua Williams were chosen members of the
Convention for the county of Washington.
In December of 1793 "John Watts, Owen Fort,
Solomon Bechum and John Marcus were appointed commissioners for building
and fixing a proper place , as nearly central as may be convenient for the
court house and gaol in the County of Washington, and the Justices
of the Inferior Court of said county, are , are authorized and
empowered to raise by tax, to be levied, a sum not exceding 250 pounds, to
be applied in payment for such public buildings" (From Watson
Brothers Book of Laws)
The Augusta newspaper of 12-9-1797 showed John Watts one of
the four commissioners of Washington County Academy. They were
advertising confiscated land for sale. The edition of 6-30-1798
showed that he and George Franklin , representiong Washington County,
signed the new Constitution for the State of Georgia.
In 1800 he was elected to be Representative to the General
Assembly. In 1801 he was elected Senator.
In 1802 he received the most votes for Senator 370,
Blacksher 289, and Stokes160. He was serving the people of our
county Feb 16, 1803 in this capacity when he died suddenly at age forty
seven.
Question:
I received an email from Colt2@juno.com
and she mentioned the newsletter. This message was on May 27, 1997 and she
talked about a newsleter that she had just received with information about
Cherokee County. I don't have one
with ref. to Cherokee County.
I have received two (2) letters, one on May 2, 1997 and the other on May
16, 1997. If there has been another that my name was dropped
accidently please send me a copy.
I'm new at this email business but I would like to thank you for what you
are doing to help. I am searching the Thomas Watts line (My Thomas
moved to Kershaw County, SC. from Georgia) I have about 1100 names
with some good biographies that I would like to share with the Watts
community. I would like to get back copies of the news letter if its
not requesting too much. Again thanks for what you are doing.
