The Watts On-line
Issue No. 23
May 16, 1997

I have now sent out the back issues #1-20. No others will be sent out at this time.  I am working on placing the back issues on a web page so they can be accessed at your convince.  Because of previous commitments, this probably will not happen until mid-summer.  If I find that there is some problem I will start over sending out the back issues.  In the meantime I appreciate your patience.  Lori

1. Marty Fee - MLFEE@aol.com

Hi,
I found out about your newsletter when starting to research my family tree. I have watts in my family tree and have only been able to go back to my gggrand parents and am hoping that you can help. Here my info.  Mary Inez Watts married James William McCoy and they lived in Alabama.  Together they had 10 children, the oldest being Marley McCoy, then Paul, Buford, Sewell, 5 others and then my grandmother Betty Irene McCoy (the youngest). I know Mary  Inez Watts had or lived on a plantation in Alabama.  James William McCoy owned property in Texas or Oklahoma. I also know that Mary Inez Watts had a sister who married a Cherokee Indian.  This is all the information I have and hope you can help.

2. Helen Graham - hgraham@cyberhighway.com

I did send some information my Watts line but have not seen it in the newsletters so I will submit it again.  I am looking for Allen Watts who was born  in Maryland in 1802 and married Elizabeth Edwards in Muskigum County Ohio in 1826.  I next find him in the 1830, 1840 , 1850 census in Knox county, Ohio with his wife and children, John, My great grandfather and Sarah, Louisa, Rebecca, James, Allen, Jr. and Elizabeth Temperance.  He sold his land in Knox county in 1852 and the next time I find him is in 1860 in Montgomery County, Indiana with Elizabeth Temperance age 11 and Edward age 5.  Allen and James are working on ranches for other people.  I cannot find out where Allen or Elizabeth died. We think that Sarah married a man by name of Thomas Jackson Lash or Losh but the next time we find him he has another wife.  They had a daughter Amanda that we find later in another household.  Louisa died in 1858 and the rest  are lost.

3. Ray James - r-james@tamu.edu

I note from your newsletter that Janet Bailey and Charles Heineman both indicate connections to Benjamin Watts, who is my oldest Watts connection.  I am pleased to learn more about him from these two contributors.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the Watts lines, but am enclosing what I do have, which is my line of descendants from Benjamin Watts and his daughter Elizabeth Key Watts.  Much of what I know about this line comes from a book on the Key family, and from Dr. Gene Key, of Dallas.

I will look forward to learning more from your newsletters and from others studying the same lines.

Regards,
Ray James

4.  Richard (Rick) L. Jaroski - RJaro@aol.com

Ella Watts was born in Elkville, Jackson County, Illinois 7 October (September) 1874. She married a Jesse Privette and they lived in DuBois, Washington County, Illinois.  Ella died 24 June 1958.  Ella had a brother I knew of named James (Jim) Watts.  He was born 2 May 1885 and died 27 May 1957. He also lived around DuBois, IL.  On the 1900 Washington County census it shows them both. James and another sister named Julia lived with their Mother name of Saraborn August 1848 in Illinois. She was remarried to a man in DuBois named Thomas Ma???  or  Me???
Sarah was listed as having had 7 kids with 5 still living then.  James and Julia were this Thomas's step kids. They had been married for 6 years at 1900.  I do not know the Watts father name, but he must have lived in Elkville, Jackson county, IL when Ella was born there.  I am unable to do much more searching on them as I am in Virginia in the Navy for another year.   If any of this lines up with you or anything you know of please let me know.

Thankyou for your reply,

Rick      RJaro@aol.com

5. Ronald A. Head - ronhead@wsnet.com

My interest in the WATTS family is based on the fact that my mother-in-law was a WATTS; therefore, my children have WATTS ancestors.

My wife, Erma Harwell (COOK) HEAD, was born 11 Mar 1949 in Montgomery, AL to Mary Helen (WATTS) and John Tyler COOK.

Mary Helen WATTS was born 3 Aug 1915 in Montgomery, AL to Bessie (JONES) and James Allie WATTS.

James Allie WATTS was born 15 Aug 1889 in Montgomery Co., AL to Mary Jane "Mollie" (WILDER) and Marvin Asbury WATTS.

Marvin Asbury WATTS was born Apr 1848 in Anson Co., NC to Eliza (DYSON?) and James Hamilton WATTS.  This family came to Pike Co., AL between 1848 and 1850.

James Hamilton WATTS (born ca 1810 NC, died 1851 Pike Co. AL) appears to be the James WATTS who resided in Columbus Co., NC in 1830:

   p. 18  James WATTS  1m 20-30; 1f 20-30  (no children)

Next door to them in 1830 was Edward WILSON, who later moved to the same area of Pike Co., AL as did the WATTS.  Other WATTS in 1830 Columbus Co. were on

   p. 07: Barnabas WATTS (b. 1810-15, w/ wife & 3 kids)
   p. 16: John WATTS  (b. 1790-1800), w/ wife & 4 kids)
   p. 16: Philip WATTS   (b. 1780-90, w/ wife & 5 kids)

Also there in 1830 was Solomon DYSON (b. 1770-80, and family), and several BOSWELL families.  Family tradition states that Eliza DYSON's mother was a BOSWELL, and the area where the WATTS settled in Pike Co., AL was called Boswell's Crossroads, and was named for settlers from Columbus Co., NC. [This area is now located in Bullock Co., AL, created from Pike in 1866.]

In 1840, James "WATS?" appears in Columbus Co. NC on p. 52:

   James WATS?  1m -5, 3m 5-10, 1m 30-40;  1f -5, 1f 20-30

On the same page appears James DYSON (b. 1780-90, & family)

By 1850, James Hamilton WATTS and family had migrated into Pike Co., AL, apparently after a brief stay in Anson Co., NC.  The unofficial WATTS family historian in this branch of the family has stated that their youngest child, Marvin Asbury WATTS, was definitely born in Anson Co., NC.

1850 Pike Co., AL

fam. #831  James WATTS  40 NC         from family sources:
Eliza   42 NC
John   20 NC John Wesley (1830-1863)
Solomon Ledbetter (d. as child)
James     16 NC James Hamilton (1834-1863)
William   14 NC William Thomas (1836-  ? )
Dennis   12 NC Dennis Leonard (1838-1864)
Christian 09 NC Christian Rebecca (1841- ? )
Baty      07 NC Doctor Bateman (1843-1932)
Marvin    03 NC Marvin Asbury  (1847-1910)

I have data on the descendants of James Hamilton WATTS, for anyone interested.  The family stayed in the Pike, Bullock, Montgomery, and Chilton Co., AL areas well into the 20th century, and many descendants are in those
places today.

I am most interested in identifying the parents and more distant ancestors of James Hamilton WATTS, and will be more than happy to correspond with others with similar interests.

6. Tanya Watts Lynn - TLynn165@aol.com

I'm Tanya Watts Lynn.  My WATTS line comes from Georgia.  I don't know where they lived before then.  I have been trying to find where Levi Watts came from and they rest of his children since 1978.  I seem to be at a dead end.  Attached is my findings (census records and book info) and my direct line.  If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.  I will send them one at a time as I don't seem to be able to attach two documents at the time.  My documents were typed in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS.  Let me know if you can't read them and I will send them in text form.
Thank you.

Subject: Captain James B. Watts

Looking for descendants of Captain JAMES B. WATTS - born in Collingwood, Ontario, son of Matthew WATTS born in Sligo Ireland.

I have no leads where Captain James Watts settled, possibly on one of the U.S. port towns of the Great lakes, as he sailed many ships for Lake Traffic.   He is credited with bringing the "Durston" through the storm of 1913.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:  It would be helpful if you could supply us a county and state you are searching in.  Also any dates would be helpful.  Lori

Question:
Thanks for the Watts on-line newsletter.  I really appreciate your effort in this.  I wish I could find someone who knows something about my Benjamin Franklin Watts.  I don't understand how he could live all of this life (up to marriage) in Cherokee Co., AL and I can't find him.  Maybe his mother remarried and he's listed under a step-father's name.   Can anyone help?

Louise - LBirchfELD@aol.com

Question:
I have found an answer re the Jacob Watts in Issue # 18, many thanks to your  posting on 3/7/97. Do you know what denomination he pastored? Also, the  location in Albemarle County? Is there anyone on the list who would be a  good resource person for Jacob's family?

William Kearns - wlkerns@intr.net

Answer:
There are many of us who are descendants of Jacob Watts and there has been lots of information on him and his descendants in the issues of the newsletter.  Jacob's parents were Thomas Watts and Esther.  There are several on-line who are descendants of siblings of Jacob.  In Issue #3 there is a lineage chart for Thomas Watts .  This will help you put the family together.   In issue #7 there are write ups of two of Jacobs descendants, George Watts and Eugene Watts.  They come through Jacobs son John, and John's son Thomas.   In Issue #8, George Marshall Watts is a son of Thomas Watts (a Baptist minister in KY and TN) and a great-grandson of Jacob.  Also in issue #8 there
is a an excerpt from the Mt Moriah United Methodist Church.

In Issue #15 there is the Statement of Mrs. Pitts.  This discusses the lineage of William Watts, a brother of Jacob.

In issue #17 there are two items of interest.  Cornelius Watts was believed to be the great-grandfather of Thomas Watts or ggg of Jacob.  There is also a very interesting article sent to me by Dale Molina about Thomas Watts family and some notes on this family.  Again Thomas was Jacob's father.  In Issue #18 there is the lineage of Jacob Watts.  It is about 4 pages long.

Now to answer you question directly about the Rev. Jacob Watts.  It is a positive he was a Methodist Minister and at least for one year he was the minister of the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church in 1806.  He also performed many marriages in Orange County and traveled a circuit.  Other proof as to his Methodist affiliation is from his will.  A Charles Parrott was the sole executor and he was also associated with the Methodist faith in the area.   The witness's of his will were John Early, Joab Early and Willis Huckstep.     It is know that Willis, his grandson was also a Methodist Minister.

There is another interesting item concerning this man.  It was written in a 1930's article in the Washington Post, that Jacob came from Edinburgh, Scotland.  This is incorrect and I put it aside for a long time.  Then some years ago I found again another reference in a list of early Watts emigrants published by the National Genealogical Society that stated Jacob Watts was an emigrant from Edinburgh, Scotland in the "early eighteenth century".  Where is this information coming from because we know for sure that Jacob was born in America, probably on his father's land in Orange County (later Culpeper Co.).  A hint to this may be the following.

Source; The Roberts-Orme Ancestry, Page 148 -149.

The Rev. Jacob studied for the ministry in Glasow, Scotland, and was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church but became a Methodist minister in later years, serving widely as a circuit rider through the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains.  During the Revolutionary War Jacob provided food and provisions for the American military and additionally he guarded Tories at Albemarle Barracks near Charottesville.  He owned over 1100 acres on the North Fork of Rivanna river near Piney Mountain in Orange and Albemarle Counties; in his last years he lived on his plantation "Homestead" in Orange Co. Jacob and wife Elizabeth on 29 mar 1801 made a trust deed to their son Elijah D. for the provision of Elizabeth and their children, ut the trut property was released by son Elijah D. on 4 Apr 1803 (Albearle Co. Deeds, 13:459, 14,229).  In his will dated 26 Jan 1821 and probated on 27 Aug 1821 in Orange Co. Jacob provided for nine named children and the five children of Frances Smith by her first husband.  Charles Parott was appointed executor (Orange Co., Wills, 5:394)

Maybe Jacob is on a ships passenger list as going and coming from Scotland and people has assumed he was an emigrant when actually he traveled there to study the ministry.  I have not done it yet but would very much like to check out the ships passenger lists and see if and when he was a passenger.  It would also be interesting to see if there was such a school in Glasgow,
Scottland.  Lori - Lorlin@aol.com

Notes:
Letter May 14, 1973 To Mr G B T Watts, Great Falls SC 29055,  P O Box 261
from Mr Leon Hollingsworth
I understood your letter to say that your Great- grandfather Watts' name was Joseph Isaiah Watts, and that your Watts Grandfather was Lewis Walter Watts, and that both of these were buried in Smyrna Methodist Churchyard in Kershaw Co South Carolina.  I have been looking over some Watts data and I see that Isaiah Watts was head of a family in the 1810 U S census of Kershaw Cpunty and his family status in ages was as follows.  3 males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16,  1 male 26 to 45,  2 females under 10, 1 female age 26 to 45 ( the letter goes on to speculate about whether this was G B T Watts'great grand father or great great grandfather and asked mr Watts to please get some dates together  and names of wives of Watts ancestors  and where they were brought up etc.)

Reply of Mr G B T Watts May 21, 1973
Dear mr Hollingsworth, I'm sending you this chart along with some information.  This is from Mrs Ackerman (Sumpter Co S C) who is looking for some information on Thomas Watts   So far I have been unable to find out anything about John Watts in this copy.  A John Watts is mentioned but I don't know if this is the one man you were looking for...
On this chart the information about my parents and great grandparents were taken from the markers I told you about in the other letter in Smyrna Cemetery.  From memory , what my grandfather told me , his father was Isaiah Watts who was an overseer for Col. Peaywho was a very rich man and owned a very fine home named "Melrose" in Fairfield Co SC , and as his father Isaiah was calling turkeys in a hunt, one of the hunters killed him through error.
Grandpa L W Watts was a Confederate Soldier, was captured  by some Union soldiers up north of Virginia or in Virginia and was held prisoner at FT Lookout Md for two years after the war.  His parole is in the Archives,  Columbis S C
I hope some of this will help.  ( Signed G B Watts)
-----------------------------------------------------
(Comment by Hollingsworth below)
(The data sent to Mr Watts by Mrs Sarah Ackerman cosisted largely of the Confederate soldier record.  She is a decendent of Julius Watts (1769-1852) and Agnes Benson (1776-1871).  They had children Rufus,  Hampton, Mary, Isaiah, Alexander,  McIntosh, Rebecca and Benson.  Mrs Ackerman said her 3rd great grandfather was Thomas Watts , wife Talitha (maiden name unknown), residents of Kershaw Co S C, original Camden District
