Lines ******************************************* MEMBERS LINES From: Suzanne Calhoun Hi, I was told that there was a newsletter for Watts researchers called THE WATTS ONLINE. I am currently researching the Watts family in Louisiana and would be grateful for any information that is available. I have a line of Watts in my family. Don't have much on them, but would be happy to share. My Watts family settled in Louisana. Oldest known member that I have is Josiah Watts (D.O.B. 12/9/1818). I don't know where he was born, but I do know that he is buried in Mill Creek Cemetary in Saline, LA. Thanks in advance, Suzanne Calhoun Researching: Calhoun, Dison, Durand, Gibson, Lee, Pollock, Stark, & Watts From: Edie Suttle, jsattle9@idt.net I would like to submit my Watts/Wills Family data for your newletter. Children: Sources: Mr. Oliver Thomas Wills, Anderson Indiana From: Lucy Bell (SLBELL1@aol.com) I descend from: Susanna WATTS (b. Feb. 24, 1750 in NY and d. May 6, 1823 in Newark, NJ) who was married to Philip KEARNY (d. in NY). They were married July 4, 1770 in Perth Amboy, NJ. Susanna was the daughter of John WATTS (b. April 5, 1715 in NYC, NY and d. Jan. 1, 1794 in London, England) and his wife, Ann de LANCEY (b. in NY and d. in NY). They were married July, 1742 in NY. John was the son of Robert WATTS (b. 1678 in Edinburgh, Scotland and d. Sept. 21, 1750 in NYC, NY) and his wife, Mary NICOLL (d. in NY). They were married in 1706 in NY. Robert was the son of John WATTS (b. in Scotland). I would like to get more information about Robert WATTS, ie, dates, places, wife, etc. Thanks in advance for any help. Lucy Bell (SLBELL1@aol.com) From: Ron Head : ronhead@wsnet.co WATTS, BOSWELL, DYSON, MERRITT, SIKES, WILSON Name: Ron Head Query My wife and I both seem to have Columbus Co., NC ancestors. Her ancestor James Hamilton WATTS (ca 1810 NC-ca 1851 Pike Co., AL) appears to be the James WATTS on page 18 of the 1830 Columbus Co. Census. Family sources say his wife Eliza was a DYSON, and that her mother was a BOSWELL. Near James WATTS in 1830 are Philip and James WATTS. James and Solomon DYSON, and Goldsbery, John, Sarah, Matthew, and Henry BOSWELL. On the same page in 1830 with Matthew BOSWELL (who later came to Pike Co., AL near James Hamilton WATTS) appears Gabriel MERRITT, born 1780-90, and apparently the same as my wife's ancestor of the same name, who appears in Montgomery Co., AL by 1840. Nearby in 1830 is Patrick MERRITT, also born 1780-90. Very close to my wife's WATTS, DYSON, BOSWELL, and MERRITT families in 1830 Columbus Co., NC appear some of my own ancestors: Edward WILSON (born 1760-70, died in Pike Co., AL) and his son-in-law Duncan SIKES (born 1790-1800), who married Nancy WILSON. I am seeking any records that will confirm the relationships among the WATTS, DYSON, and BOSWELL families, and look forward to corresponding with anyone researching these as well as my own WILSON and SIKES families From: Louise
Birchfield - LBirchfELD@aol.com Thanks, ******************************************** QUERIES 1. Is any researching RALPH L. WATTS? I found a picture of him in "The Annual Publication of the Junior Class of the Pennsylvania State College", Volume XXXIII published in 1922 (I bought the book). He looks exactly like "my Uncle Charlie Watts". I would like to know if there is a connection. Please e-mail me: pbresina@3-cities.com. Thanks. 2. Looking for information on Franklin Watts born 08 OCT 1831, son of Johnnie Watts and Durcilla Ham. Franklin married Sarah Ellen Ramsey born 1837. Does anyone know who the parents are of Sarah Ramsey and when Franklin died. Thank you. Edie Suttle, jsattle9@idt.net 3. I'm enclosing early information on my WATTS line in very strong hopes that someone out there will make a connection and shed a little more light on a long search for the parents of three brothers Alexander Watts was born on July 12, 1809, in the area where Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi borders meet. He is listed on the 1830 Federal Census of Marion County, Alabama, as a newly married man, having married Malinda Franks. Malinda Franks was born November 5, 1805, in South Carolina. After their marriage, they lived near the community of Pikesville, AL., on the land of or next door to John and Jane Franks, whom it is believed, are Malinda's parents. This is not confirmed since there are a number of Franks families living in Marion County. They are part of a large group of Franks that migrated from North Carolina, to South Carolina, to White Co. Tennessee, to Marion County, AL.. The courthouse in Marion County burn more than once so most records were destroyed. In 1838-39, Alexander and Malinda moved across the state line to Itawamba County, Mississippi, near the community of Fulton. Alexander, is a farmer and a blacksmith by trade. The 1850 Census of Itawamba Co., also list a Thomas and James Watts living near by. There is no record, but it is strongly believed that these three men are brothers. They name their children after each other and their wives. The following is a family list of these families: Alexander Watts with Malinda Children:
Thomas Wats with Priscilla Children:
James S. Watts with Missilda Children:
The three families lived near each other in Itawamba County, Mississippi, until about 1854, when Alexander and Malinda decided to migrate to Caldwell County, Texas. It appears that other families in this county moved as a group to Texas. Thomas and Priscilla Watts elected to move on to Arkansas, where they settled in Jefferson County. Both Thomas and Priscilla died between 1860 and 1870. Clarissa, the oldest daughter is shown as the head of household in the 1870 census. They lived near the township of Madison, Grant County. Jefferson County was the parent county of what was to become parts of Grant (2/4/1869), Hot Springs, Cleveland and Lincoln (3/28/1871) counties. No record of the deaths has been located. In the 1880 Census of Grant County, young Alexander is married to Serna and have four children, Martha J., Sarah, Georgia and Charles. John Thomas, married Sarah A. and is buried Grapevine, AR.. There is no further information on the other children. James and his family stayed in Mississippi. Four sons of Alexander and Malinda Watts served in the Civil War on the side of the South. In their later years they moved to Blanco County, Texas, in order to be near their children, whom had migrated there looking for better land. Malinda died on March 24, 1872. Alexander died December 22, 1878, and both are buried in the Blanco Cemetery, Blanco, Texas. A number of researchers who descended from Alexander and Mailinda Watts, including myself, have spent years trying to find Alexander's parents or some clue as to where he and Thomas and James came from....... It is strongly believed that they named their first son ZACHARIAH JOHN WATTS after both grandfathers. If what is true regarding John Franks being Malinda's father, then there may be a ZACHARIAH WATTS somewhere and his wife's name may be CLARISSA . Kindest Regards,

Submitted by GSimp78584@aol.com ******************************************** WATTS HOSPITAL (now the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics) West Club Boulevard and Broad Street (Here is more about the Watts Hospital and George Washington Watts written about in Issue #19 of the Watts Newsletter) Durham tobacco millionaire George Washington Watts gave the fabulous sum of $1,000,000 in 1906 to build the finest medical institution south of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The hospital opened in 1909 and originally consisted of the Main building facing Broad Street, an operating facility, and patient pavilions for men and women. The buildings were designed by Boston architect Bertrand S. Taylor in an eclectic Mediterranean style with close connections to the Spanish Mission and Italian styles gaining in popularity in the west and south. In 1926, a third and larger patient pavilion was opened. Watts gave this building in memory of his wife Valinda Beale Watts, who died in 1921. The brick additions facing West Club and Maryland Avenue were added around 1950. The lobby of the Administration building is now as it appeared in 1909 and is probably the most beautiful public space in Durham. The hospital closed in 1976 and in 1980, its 27-acre campus became the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. ******************************************** 1790 census for South Carolina SC Camden Dist, Fairfield Co WATTS, THOMAS 1WM>15, 1WF, adjacent to WATTS, JOHN 2WM>15, 1WM,15, 7WF.
