Thanks to all of you who have helped by sending in you full name. I think I have most of them now and have revamped the list. I have also had a several people tell me they have not received a newsletter in a few weeks. There are several reasons this could happen. If you ever do not receive a newsletter please message me as I would not want you to miss out. If you are ever temporarily off line, your mail can come back to me and that will kick your name off the list. I apologize for any inconvenience. ******************************************** Contents: 1. Members

Dana M Miller - tigger241@juno.com From the 1900 Marion Co. Ga. Census. I was able to find the name C.C. Watts born in 1862. His wife was M. Fr. ( don't know her actual name ) born in 1865. If any one knows what C.C. stands for please give me the info. Their children are listed below: James B. 1888 Typed by Dana Marice Miller. Born March 9,1976 (

ROBIN Y GILLIAM - KTFM02A@prodigy.com I'm not certain what is appropriate for me to send you. All that I have really established for myself was that my ggg-grandmother was Elon (Ellen?) Watts, b. c.1797 in Georgia, d. Sept. 1856 in Henderson Co., Texas. Another researcher into the Hightower family line (Elon married Charnell Hightower) has given me information going back eight generations from Elon, but I do not know the sources, so I cannot vouch for its veracity. Please let me know if you want more. -Robin 3. Diane

Pyle ******************************************** In the 1/17/97 issue Carol wrote the following query: I'm still searching from the African-American side of
the Watts' . Were any of
these people slave holders that have appeared in the newsletter.
I am particularly looking for a Richard Watts of Laurens, S.C. who
was 63 in 1860 and held slaves.
I do not know where he was born. Thanks for keep ing me informed.
I need a ll the help I can get. Ciao Easy Skier
(EASY SKIER@aol.com) I sent her a reply with the following family: Richard Watts was born 18 Aug 1897 in Middlesex Co.
VA and died in Laurens Co. SC. His parents were John Watts b. abt 1764 in Middlesex
Co. VA and died 13 Oct 1812 at this home on the Saluda River in South
Carolina at the age of 48. He
was known as Capt. John Watts. He
married Margaret Pollard on 2 July 1788 in VA Children of John and Margaret were: Beaufort Taylor Watts b.
10 Apr 1789 John Watts came with his parents and sibling's families from VA. John Watts Parents were James Watts and Susannah Taylor Children of James and Susannah were: 1.George Watts b. 11 Jan 1762 in Hanover Co. VA and d. 4 Jan 1835 He married Mary B. Walker 21 Apr 1788 in Laurens Co. SC . He later moved to Tennessee and died there. Children of George Watts and Mary Walker were: a. Salley
b. 1 Mar 1790 2.Richard Watts (became a planter of considerable wealth and owned Island Ford Plantation on the Saluda River in SC.) 3. John Watts (mentioned above) 4. James
Watts In Issue # 13 of the Watts Newsletter, there are
bible records sent in by Barbara S. (DavidS3919@aol.com). These are obviously part of this family.
How do they tie in Barbara? In her profile Carol wrote:
My grandfather was named George Washington Watts b 1865? d 1932.
He had three brothers Gus, Bill and James Watts.
The family story goes that they also had four sisters but they
passed over the color line. They were supposedly from Laurens County,
South Carolina however I haven't been able to find them there.
In speaking with an older cousin, she said that she had jeard that
my grandfather was white. I can't document this as yet. When I sent her some information on Richard she wrote:
I was looking at the slave rolls for Richard Watts and found a two
year old black male. His were
the only slave rolls in Laurens that had a child the age that my
grandfather would have been at that time.
I am interested in finding any property deeds, wills, etc. on this
man. Any information that you
may have would be greatly appreciated.
Is there anywhere that might state if he had slave children?
I really need more proof. Thanks
for the help.........Ciao Easy This is very interesting side of the family.
Were the color lines crossed?
What were the circumstances? Or
did her George Washington Watts take on his name from his famly who may
have been owned by a Watts? There is no doubt that the many Watts’ in the south were large slave holders. How many of them took the Watts name is unknown. Can any of you who tie into this line in Laurens County, South Carolina help her out with deeds or will etc. mentioning names of slaves etc? ******************************************** EARLY SETTLERS OF

In reference to the proceedings of Owen Evans in endeavoring to press Maidens to be sent to the Bermudas and Virginia -- that same bred such terror as above forty young women fled out of the parish of Ottery and were not yet to be found : That he threatened Prewe should answer his conduct in another place, if he failed, that Thomas Crocker should be hanged in the morning if he failed to press him some maidens, that Michell compounded with Evans for ten shillings to be free : and that Evans gave JOHN WATTS four shillings to press him four maidens and bring them to him at Sherborne Co., Dorset, and twelve pence to one Jacob Crystel to press Evans his [Cryste's] daughter. UCD Shields Library F221 V5 Volume 6 c.2 Submitted by pwallred@pplant.ucdavis.edu (Allred, Paul W.) ******************************************** Possible Errors: My husband descends from the Watts line that Mary Pitts did. Recent research I have done suggests that Captain Thomas Harris is not the grandfather of Thomas Harris III who sired John I . Adventurer of Purse and Person-editon 3 stops at
Thomas Harris III and gives no ancestry for him.
In another source also Captain Thomas Harris is not a descendant of
Sir William Harris of Crixe. I
am still trying to trace Thomas Harris III back but no luck so far.
He is not one of the "Five Thomas Harrises of Isle of Wight Va".
The Thomas Harris III [as I refer to him], the one who had John Harris I
who m Ursala and had John Harris II who m Obedience
Turpin and they had Lucy Harris who m
LT Obadiah Smith [1755-1808]. Adventuer
or Purse and Person, 3rd edition list Thomas Harris III as the husband of
Mary Jefferson, the sister of Thomas
Jefferson whose daughter, Mary, married Thomas Turpin II [1708-1790] and
had Obedience Turpin [see
above]. I have not seen proof of Thomas Harris III marriage.
I just report what I have found so that people will not be misled.
What Mary Pitts writes about the Watts family has agreed with other
sources. It is the Harris
ancestors that get in trouble. Hope
someone else has found some data to straighten this out.
