WELCOME!! This is our first issue of the Watts newsletter and I
am very excited about the possibilities.
Notice I said it is “OUR” first issue.
That is because the success of this newsletter will depend on you.
Contributions are always accepted and appreciated.
Our goal here is to enhance your “Watts” research and hopefully
connect you with others working on your direct “Watts” line. Technology
has come a long way over the past few years and it is amazing we are able
to communicate and share information so easily.
I hope you will all take advantage of this and share some of your
research with us. Queries are
accepted and we ask that if you answer by direct E-mail that you
forward us a copy of your answer so it can be published.
Others may be helped by your knowledge. 1. Members
lines ***************************************** MEMBERS LINES 1. Lori Linnell - Lorlin@aol.com - Let me start with my own: I am descended from Thomas Watts b. abt 1690 in Culpepper Co., VA and his wife Esther. They had a son Jacob Watts b. 19 Jul 1730 and d. 14 Apr 1821 in Orange Co., VA. His wife was Elizabeth Durrett b. 1739 in Albemarle Co., VA and d. 11 Jan 1819 in Albemarle Co., VA. They had a son John Watts b. 24 Jan 1756 in Orange Co., VA and d. 13 Sep 1823 in Albemarle Co., VA. His wife was Lucy Dalton b. 15 Dec 1761 in Albemarle Co., VA and d. 16 Sep 1844 in Randlolf Co., MO. At this time my research is concentrating on finding the families of these ancestors. That had taken me into Kentucy and Missouri and beyond. 2. Paul Allred - pwallred@ucdavis.edu - Paul is also descended from these same Virginia ancestors. He is currently concentrating his research in Kentucy and Missouri looking for Watts and allied families. Allied Families he is interested in are: Twyman, Haggard, Bruce, Dunn, Wills, Head, Austin, Durrett, Huckstep, Rhodes, Long, and Brown. He is willing to exchange GedCom files. Paul has played a big part in getting this newsletter going. He has been a big contributor and given me the encouragement needed to get this project going. Thanks Paul! Paul’s partial Family Line: Irene Bowen Watts (b. 1910-Kanosh, Millard Co. , UT/d 1994 - Sacramento Ca.) husband: A.E. Allred; Robert Watts (b: 1881 - Kanosh, Millard Co., UT/d: 1971 - Chico, Butte Co., Ca) wife: Florence S. Bowen; Baldwin H. Watts (b. Raymond, Hinds Co., MS/d: Kanosh, Millard Co., UT) wife: Emma Wheadon: Robert H. Watts (b. 1801 - Orange Co., VA/d 1880 - Davis Co., UT) Wife: Elizabeth Heath; John Watts (b. 1756 - Orange Co., VA: Wife: Lucy Dalton; Jacob Watts (b: 1730 Albemarle Co., VA/d: 1821 Orange Co., VA) Wife: Elizabeth Durrett; Thomas Watts (b. 1700 d. ? Culpepper Co., VA) wife: Ester ?; Edward Watts (b. 1620/d 1690) wife: Ann. 3. My ties with the Watts family are through my paternal grandmother, who was Ruth Marion Watts, daughter of George Washington Watts (b. 2-22-1862 in Northampton, MA) and Kate Darling Pringle. George W. Watts' father was Henry Law Watts, unknown date/place of birth. That is as far as we have information on, and our data about Kate and George is sketchy. My goals are to obtain more solid information about them and then trace backwards as far as possible. Cheryl Van De Hey 4. My relationship to the WATTS line doesn't start until my g(9)-grandmother, Mercy WATTS. My research goals are to learn as much about her ancestry as possible and to find cousins associated with this line. Partial Family Line: Mercy WATTS (b: 17 Feb 1665 - Wenham, Essex Co., MA/d: 12 Feb 1724 - Bristol, Bristol Co., RI) husband: Joshua FINNEY (m: 31 May 1688 - Bristol Co., RI); Jerimiah WATTS (b: ?/d: ?) wife: ? * Rankin, Kevin M. - rankin.kevin@sma1.mcclellan.af.mil/19
Coriander 5. I am David Alan Eaton, grandson of Viola Frances Watts (still living). We are descendents of the line of alternating generational names of David and James Watts who lived in GreenbrierCo,VA (now WV) from the 1780s and many of them moved to GalliaCo,OH around the 1820s. All of the Watts people in those two places at those two dates seem to be related to me. Also, to Mary Arnold (arnoldmb@aol.com) who is also on this Watts list. We believe we are descended from David Watts born about 1725 in Scotland and his son James Watts (b. 1753 Maryland, d. 1810 GreenbrierCo,VA). I encourage all folks to find the places where their families lived and add their comments to that county in the US GenWeb project on the Internet. This is really taking off and becoming a great way to find distant relatives to work with. Dave Eaton - devo@VNET.IBM.COM 6. MALACHI WATTS d. 1804 Anson Co NC is my gggg grand father anscestor. His dau was JEMINA mar JOSEPH WOOD. Dau JEMINA WOOD mar JOHN KING. Dau LUCY KING mar HENRY HUDGENS. Dau SALLIE HUDGENS mar ROBERT PERRY DENTON. Dau OLLIE DENTON mar WALTER GILBREATH. Dau WALTA GILBREATH mar NEIL HUARD. My comments is that this is a female line and I have been able to follow it on down. It pleases me. Goals: At present I'm waitng for the direct and reverse deeds of Anson Co NC, hopong to prove MALACHI WATTS first wife was JEMINA. That will give me three generations of JEMINA'S. And I like that. On the JOSEPH WOOD line I hope to establish him as first family of TExas. But I don't even know what first families of TEXAS is called. But I can learn. I don't know if this is and indian line or not. Also want to look into Malachi Watts being a Regulator.(1771). I hope that gives you a general feeling of what I'm doing in WATTS genealogy. I don't plan to write a book genealogy book but I may use my reasearch as a base for writing factional writing. That is facts written in a fiction story. I do that kind of writing. What else? Doing research in SC and NC is difficult for I have mostly done work in TN. The above JOHN KING I have him as a First FAmily of TN. That was fun. OK, Lori that tells you of my WATTS interest. What else need I tell you? I hoping to be a grandmother soon. My children are all grown and I follow my husband around. A.15 Volume 98 - Year:
1913 ****************************************** John Hook, Robert Cowan and Thomas Watts had been Tories during the Revolution and were three of the leaders of the Tory conspiracy in Bedford Co. in 1780. The leaders were apprehended, but instead of being jailed and tried in New London [the old county seat of Bedford, now called Bedford Spgs.], where many of the Tories lived, they were taken to Col. Charles Lynch's home near the junction of the Staunton and Otter Rivers, twenty miles from New London. The summary punishments, principally floggings, dispensed by Col. Lynch gave rise to the expression "Lynch Law." All three of these Tories had connections with the Keys, who were patriots. Thomas Watts lived in Bedford Co., south of the Staunton River, as early as 1779; co-witnessed a 1783 deed whereby John Key bought 440 acres in Bedford Co., and sold 230 acres in Bedford Co. to John Hook in 1784. This material under the heading *George Key, VA. Patriot* appeared to be a part of a long article on the Keys, that was in several quarterlies of in Volume 17 (for the entire year of 1973) and/or Volume 18 (for the entire year of 1974) of "The Virginia Genealogist" by John F.
